SCAM ALERT: If you get a letter like the one shown below, do not respond. It is a scam. It may look official, but it is not from any office in Lawrence County. Real property tax letters will only come from the Sheriff’s Office or the County Attorney’s Office.
• Do not call the number listed on the letter.
• Do not share personal information or financial information
• If you are unsure about your property taxes, you can verify with our office at (606) 638-4368 or check your payment status online at our website, www.lawrencecokysheriff.org

The 2025 Gas and Oil property tax bills were mailed Saturday, August 1. If you are expecting a gas and oil tax bill and do not receive it by August 15, please call our office at (606) 638-4368.

The collection dates are:
Discount August 1, 2026-August 31, 2026
Face Amount September 1, 2026-September 30, 2026
5% Penalty October 1, 2026-October 31, 2026
21% Penalty November 1, 2026- January 15, 2027

SCAM ALERT: Beware of Jury Duty Phone Scams

Our office has received several reports this week of a phone scam in which callers falsely claim to be law enforcement officers or representatives of the federal court system.

The caller tells victims they have missed federal jury duty and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest unless they immediately pay a fine. They may pressure you to stay on the phone, threaten arrest, or instruct you to make payment using gift cards, cryptocurrency, or electronic payment apps.

In one instance, a victim even received paperwork that looked like it came from the Department of Justice. The documents included the victim’s name and Social Security number, but listed the wrong date of birth. Scammers often use real pieces of your information to make the call sound legitimate.

• Law enforcement will never call you demanding payment to avoid arrest.
• Courts do not collect fines or fees over the phone.
• Jury duty notifications are generally sent through official mail, not by unsolicited phone calls.
• Phone numbers can be spoofed to appear as though the call is coming from a legitimate agency. Trust your instincts, not your caller ID.

If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately. Do not provide any personal information, banking information, or payment.

SCAM ALERT: Fraudulent foreclosure letters are circulating. These letters claim your home may be sold in an auction due to foreclosure and offer to assist you. Although these letters appear official, they are a scam! If you receive a similar letter like the one attached, do not respond. Scammers use these numbers to trick you into providing personal information or making a payment. Scams can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission at ftc.gov.
