The Louisburg Police Department is warning residents to be alert for home improvement and contractor scams. We have received information from residents who have paid contractors for work started but never completed, leading to large financial losses. Here are some tips to consider when hiring someone to work on your house

Common Warning Signs of a Scam
• Unsolicited door-to-door contractors offering repairs or claiming to have “leftover materials”
• High-pressure tactics urging you to act immediately
• Requests for large upfront payments or cash-only transactions
• Refusal or inability to provide a written contract or detailed estimate
• Lack of proper licensing, insurance, or verifiable local references
• Requests for signatures on documents you do not fully understand

How to Protect Yourself
• Verify the contractor’s license and insurance through your state or local licensing authority. Ask to see a current insurance certificate. If the contractor tells you a city permit is not needed, beware!
• Ask the contractor for names and numbers for area residents for whom work has been completed.
• Obtain multiple written estimates before agreeing to any work; once a scope of work is agreed upon, get a signed contract in writing.
• NEVER pay the full amount upfront; use a payment schedule tied to completed work
• Avoid paying in cash—use checks or credit cards when possible
• Carefully read all contracts and retain copies for your records
• Be cautious of contractors who claim they are “working in the area” but cannot provide a permanent business address.

If It Sounds Too Good to Be True, It Probably Is!
Scammers often rely on urgency and fear to pressure homeowners.
Take your time and trust your instincts.

Today on 10/01/25 a citizen called in an animal complaint regarding a snake that was found moving from 4th Street into the City Park across from the 1st Baptist Church at 4th and Elm Street. Officers responded and along with other City Public Works crew discovered the snake which turned out to be a mature Copperhead reptile that was handled and removed from the area. Checks were made to insure there were no other snakes of this variety still crawling about. While it is uncommon to find this type of snake in populated locations since they tend to avoid most people, they are native to the region and can occasionally turn up. Please be vigilant when out and about in our parks and other areas where trees and thicker foliage can be near the trails and equipment and structures. If you do observe a snake or other wild animal, please try to avoid it as most often it is not wanting to to be near you as well. And if you are just not sure, please reach out to the local animal control to handle the creature to insure that there are no issues that might be a safety concern. The local animal control in Louisburg is the Louisburg Police Department. To reach them, call Dispatch at 837-2300 and request an Officer to respond. Thanks.

The Police Department had a visit on Thursday from Kelly & Dennis Castoldi, with their pet "Officer Chip." Their young son Dominic named the dog as he thought all German Shepherds were "police dogs." Dominic wanted Officer Chip to be able to visit the Police Station. Thank you Castoldi Family for the visit!

LOUISBURG POLICE MEDIA RELEASE

On Thursday 07/17/25 around 5:50 PM, Officers from Louisburg PD and Miami County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance in the area of N. 4th Terrace in Louisburg. While officers were trying to calm the parties involved, a male suspect threatened Officers and responded back inside the residence and barricaded himself upstairs advising that he was armed with a firearm and demanded that officers leave the home. Additional assistance was requested from surrounding agencies, and Officers from Paola Police Department, Osawatomie Police Department and further deputies from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call for assistance. The Louisburg Fire Department also sent an apparatus to assist in the area with traffic control due to the potential threat to the public by an armed subject as access into the housing division was temporarily blocked until the incident could be further contained. The male subject eventually surrendered and was taken into custody after the brief standoff. Officers learned that the subject was not actually armed and did not have access to a firearm but had portrayed to those on scene that he did. There was no actual threat to the safety of community members who live nearby. After being taken into custody the subject was eventually lodged into the Miami County Jail, pending criminal charges. Nobody was injured during this event, and thanks and appreciation is sent out to those other agencies who assisted in this incident.
