Colleges across the country were closing their childcare centers even before COVID, contributing to the crisis of childcare availability. Some of the schools in the 13-member Kentucky Community & Technical College System used to offer childcare to students but have closed those centers.

If we're going to have universal pre-k in Louisville, Jefferson Community & Technical College is going to have to be a vital partner, training teachers and offering care.

Raise your hand if you're not surprised to hear that disruptions in childcare increase behavioral problems in children and emotional distress in parents. ๐Ÿ™‹ ๐Ÿ™‹ ๐Ÿ™‹

The city of Louisville can and must stabilize the early childhood care and education ecosystem so families can thrive. With a mayor's budget recommendation approved by Metro Council, Louisville can open childcare up to more families and compensate providers at a level that dramatically cuts staff turnover.

Not everyone qualifies for the federal Head Start program, but Louisville's next mayor can build a citywide version that changes the lives of children and the trajectory of our city.
