Chief David Howser, the last Fire Chief of the original Lyndon Fire Department, recently announced his retirement from his position as Assistant Fire Chief of St. Matthews Fire & EMS on May 1, 2023. This decision comes after 42+ years of dedicated service to the department, our community, and the greater commonwealth.

Chief Howser started his journey as a volunteer firefighter with the Lyndon Fire Department while still in high school in 1980. He was hired as one of the
first career firefighters of the Lyndon Fire Department in 1984 along with three other future fire service leaders like Jim Baker, Ron Mingus and John Stich. Since those early days as a firefighter, Chief Howser held various positions and took on varied responsibilities. Over the years, he served as a Vice President for the Jefferson County Fire Chiefs Association, a Vice President and Legislative Agent for the Kentucky Association of Fire Chiefs, and a board member of the
Kentucky Fire Commission appointed by Governor Matt Bevin.

Chief Howser was instrumental in the merger of the St. Matthews and Lyndon Fire Protection Districts in 2018. In this merger, he demonstrated leadership and his unwavering commitment to the well-being of our community above his personal needs for the greater good of the fire departments and this community. In recognition of his proven leadership, he was named the Kentucky Fire Chief of the Year in 2018 by the Kentucky Association of Fire Chiefs.

We wish Chief Howser the best of luck in a well-earned retirement, and we will miss his dedicated
service!

On behalf of the citizens of the Lyndon and St. Matthews Fire Protection Districts we Thank You for your many years of "Honorable Service For All"! Congratulations and now enjoy you retirement!
