UP for Women and Children

UP for Women and Children Our model is simple, partner with anyone who can help to address the issue of homelessness.

In 2016, we identified a community need for women: a safe space for homeless women and children to go during the day to access showers, laundry, case managers and social services. Founders Andrea and Amy, began a needs assessment by meeting with over 16 service providers and nearly 40 homeless women who were living on the streets and sleeping in the shelters. They were met with overwhelming support and so in 2017 Uniting Partners for Women and Children was founded.

When a woman receives the keys to her own apartment, she deserves to walk into more than four walls.

She deserves dignity.
She deserves support.
She deserves to feel welcomed home.

We are collecting Welcome Baskets for women moving into their own apartments. Needed items include laundry baskets, cleaning supplies, towels, toiletries, paper products, and nonperishable food.

Starting over often means carrying everything you own from one chapter to the next.

We’re collecting gently used luggage, backpacks, and bags to support women as they move through housing transitions, job opportunities, and new beginnings.

If you’re spring cleaning this season, your extra bag could become someone else’s fresh start.

Our volunteers show up in so many meaningful ways. Some staff our coffee station each morning from 9–12, offering warm drinks and food to the women who walk through our doors. Others spend their weeks in our donations and mail room, sorting contributions and keeping our daily operations running smoothly.

A dedicated few help maintain our furniture, stepping in for small repairs that keep our space welcoming and functional. And our sandwich volunteers make a lunchtime run to Feed Louisville each week, delivering meals directly to UP so no one goes hungry. Every role matters. Every hour given is an act of care.

After successfully completing her Fall Internship at UP, Angela joined the team as a Client Support Specialist!

Angela worked in medical social work for 12 years and in school social work for 11 years. She is currently earnin a MSSW at (UofL’s) Kent School (of Social Work and Family Science) and plans to graduate in May of 2027.

She feels passionate about serving women and children and is honored to walk alongside them as they identify and address barriers to becoming housed and work to reach their goals for safe, stable, supportive, and permanent housing.

She and her husband, Victor, raised three outstanding children and are blessed to love their partners, as well. They are proud grandparents and are enjoying experiencing all four seasons, exploring the dynamic city, and camping in the beautiful state parks.

Each quarter, the UP team pauses to recognize the colleagues whose dedication, creativity, and compassion elevate everything we do. This edition, we celebrate four outstanding honorees whose contributions across two quarters reflect the very best of our mission and community.

Q1 — January 2026
Julie, Operations Director: Julie has been the quiet engine behind some of UP's most significant operational milestones this quarter — onboarding new case managers, supporting the new Executive Director's transition, leading a multi-month employee handbook review, and building a stronger, more collaborative case management team. Her attentiveness to people and processes ensures that everyone who joins UP feels welcomed and set up for success.

Quany, Security Specialist: Quany has been a steady, reliable presence in the shelter, ensuring that both clients and staff feel safe and supported every day. But this quarter he went further — advocating meaningfully for clients, ensuring their needs were heard and addressed, and proactively learning other shelter roles to strengthen the whole team. His initiative and care make the shelter a better place for everyone in it.

Q2 — April 2026
Trent, Client Support Specialist: Trent's commitment to the people we serve is reflected in every interaction. Their consistent presence and dedication to client well-being exemplify what it means to show up for our mission — not just in the big moments, but in the everyday work of creating dignity, connection, and hope for our guests.

Ryan, Shelter Manager: Ryan leads with quiet strength — a calm, grounding presence for both staff and clients, even in the most challenging moments. Through consistent leadership, clear boundaries, and genuine compassion, Ryan models what it looks like to hold a team together with both accountability and care. The shelter is a place of dignity and hope in large part because of the steady foundation they provide every single day.

Grateful doesn't even begin to cover it. 🙏

The Louisville Metro Office of Social Services has been an incredible partner to UP for Women and Children, connecting us with clients who need support, investing in our programs, and working alongside us to build a stronger safety net for women and families in our city.

We couldn't do this work without community partners like you. Thank you for showing up for Louisville. 💛
