I have spent time weighing whether and how to speak in this moment, knowing that public words can carry real consequences for people already living in fear. That responsibility is not lost on me. Still, silence has consequences too and is not an option.
My heart is heavy for the lives that have been lost and for the families now grieving unimaginable loss. The killing of American citizens must be condemned — plainly and without exception. No family should ever lose a loved one because of government action.
I have devoted my life to public service and understand how fragile public trust can be once it begins to break. What we are seeing right now is not law enforcement. Law enforcement does not violate constitutional rights. It does not rely on escalation, random detentions, or tactics that spread fear in communities. Actions that disregard the Constitution and result in the loss of innocent life do not make us safer — they place everyone at greater risk and should not be justified or funded with taxpayer dollars.
These are serious and painful times, and I want the people I serve to know this: I see you, and I hear you. Congress has a responsibility to fix our broken immigration system and to stop allowing harm and chaos to spill into our communities. I am calling on federal leaders to work with state officials and to support a transparent investigation so the public can understand what happened and why. I will continue listening, upholding the Constitution, engaging community voices, and leading with clarity, resolve, and an unwavering commitment to doing more.
