It is official, both government bodies approved the defunding of the historic Louisville Memorial Auditorium for the new $1.38 billion dollar (July 1st 2026 - June 30th 2027) fiscal year this past week for city of Louisville, Kentucky.

The maintenance appropriation required by Kentucky state law which created the institution will now have $20,000 instead of $132,996 annually to support the community asset.
It was already challenging to work with the previous funding that had not changed for decades.
However, the organization is an American institution that has survived (The Great Depression / World War II / Civil Unrests / Economic Disasters / Pandemic) and now this recent governmental decision-making.
Next, the 100 year law will be tested as next steps begin.
One of the required services is legal representation by the Jefferson County Attorney's Office who is mandated by legislation to represent the auditorium or in this case pay for a non-conflict legal counsel, since the office also represents Louisville Metro Government.
The office has an estimated $17 million budget itself, which will beneficial.
Over the summer, the organization's foundation will continue to apply for grants and raise the funding needed to match the $500k grant Mayor Craig Greenberg and Metro Council awarded the auditorium towards the HVAC estimated $3 million installation cost.
The Metro grant is in a protected account and cannot be used for general maintenance or any expenses other than the HVAC project.
The commission board signed an official agreement with Metro Government, that details if the matching funds are not raised the grant will be turned back over to the city on (July 7th 2027) as agreed.
As explained to the general public via recent media announcements and interviews, it will be very difficult to focus on fundraising when the mayor and metro council are defunding the organization that serves an estimated 200,000 guests on a seasonal basis who attend events and generate an estimated $3.7 million economic impact.
Fortunately, the auditorium has loyal office tenants, clients and donors who have and will continue to see the value of the historic Louisville Memorial Auditorium.
