What’s that in their hands? It’s a planisphere, a rotating star map that helps you identify which stars and constellations are visible in the night sky.

These curious minds gathered for our Summer Constellations Stargazing event to learn how to use planispheres, find summer constellations, and discover more about the amazing night sky above us.

What do owl pellets, live raptors, bugs, and animal tracks have in common? They were all part of one wild afternoon at yesterday’s Wildlife Day Celebration!

Families got an up-close look at the wildlife around us while discovering how even small actions can help protect animals and the places they call home. With Open Space staff, Nature’s Educators, the Butterfly Pavilion, and the Keep It Clean Partnership, participants met live birds of prey, explored the world of bugs, investigated tracks and s**t, dissected owl pellets, practiced bird identification, played games, and learned about aquatic species and healthy watersheds.

Thanks to everyone who came out to explore, learn, and get a little wild with us in Louisville!

Calling all young explorers! This fall, solve mysteries, take on challenges, and explore Louisville’s open spaces with new Agents of Discovery missions. Each month’s missions will be available on the Agents of Discovery app starting at 9 a.m. on the first day of the month and will remain available through the end of the month.

September: The Wild Food Webs of Harper Lake, and Picnic Poachers.
October: Spooky Science, and Trail Maintenance 101.
November: Protect land, water, & wildlife, and Become a BARK Ranger.

Fall is not too far away, so it's time to get out and enjoy the night sky! Join the Open Space Stargazers on Sunday, September 6 at 7:30 p.m. as we take in views of iconic summer constellations such as Sagittarius and Scorpio and learn some fun tricks for identifying key stars and constellations.

What does an owl eat? How can you identify an animal by its tracks? And what is it like to see a raptor up close?

Find out at the Wildlife Day Celebration on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. Open Space staff will host a free, drop-in event at Harper Lake Open Space, giving families a chance to get closer to nature in a fun, interactive way. There is no set start time, so come when it works for your family and explore at your own pace anytime between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.

Kids can:
-Meet 3–4 live raptors with Nature’s Educators
-Explore bugs with the Butterfly Pavilion
-Investigate animal tracks, s**t, and owl pellets
-Practice bird identification and other nature activities
-Learn about aquatic species & watersheds with Keep it Clean Partnership

Please leave dogs at home. Parking is limited, so please walk, bike, scooter, or stroll to the event if possible. Registration is not required. Learn more at https://bit.ly/4xv8XFg

Heads up! There is going to be a trail closure on the Coal Creek Trail at Dutch Creek for Bridge Plank Replacement Tuesday, Sept. 1 and Wednesday, Sept. 2 from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The Open Space team will be replacing degraded planks on the Dutch Creek bridge. The work will require a daytime closure of the trail segment between Augusta Lane to the Dutch Creek pocket prairies.

Detour information:
- There will be no through access at the closure.

- Anyone who reaches the closure will be required to turn around and return to the posted detour route.

- The detour follows the Powerline Trail via Dillon Road and West Cherry Street and will add approximately half a mile to travel along the Coal Creek Trail.

- Signs will be posted in the area to direct trail users around the closure.

Please plan for additional travel time, especially if you use the trail for commuting.

We understand this work will disrupt a heavily traveled route and appreciate your patience and cooperation in following posted detour signs while we complete the project.

This year marks 20 seasons of working with the Boulder County Youth Corps, and they just wrapped up another busy summer in Louisville.

Over the summer, the crew mulched and weeded flower beds, installed new educational signs, removed old fencing and barbed wire, tackled noxious weeds at Davidson Mesa, and installed 112 feet of new fencing at the Daughenbaugh parking lot. That is a lot of work packed into one summer.

Thank you to the Boulder County Youth Corps for another great season and for helping us care for Louisville’s parks and open spaces. We appreciate everything you accomplished this summer!
