Trees are an important part of Riparian Buffers. The root systems stabilize streambanks, reducing erosion of the streambank. Additionally, tree roots are big sponges, soaking up water from the stream. A single tree can absorb ~150 gallons of water in a single day (actual capacity depends on the age, size and type of tree)! Along a stream bank, that water absorption is critical to managing water flow and mitigating flooding. buffers

The benefits of summer mulching are numerous. It is a great soil protector from the intense heat in terms of both temperature and water retention, which is important for the health of the soil and the wonderful soil microbes that support plant health. Mulching in summer will also suppress weeds that thrive in the summer. Their growth will be inhibited and your plants will be protected with some summer mulching!

Intentional plantings of water-loving natives along stream banks called Riparian Buffers, are excellent ways to help reduce pollution in waterways while also reducing flooding. This nature-based solution is a win-win for streams and people! For the next two years, the Conservation District will be utilizing some of their 319 grant funding to work with community partners like MSD, Louisville MetroParks, Olmstead Parks and stream-side neighbors to install more riparian buffers along the Middle Fork of Beargrass Creek and its tributaries. If you live in the Middle Fork of Beargrass Creek Watershed or adjacent to any stream or creek in Jefferson County, please contact [email protected] to see how we can help establish a riparian buffer along your stream. We are specifically looking for neighborhood associations and other groups who can help tend to installations beyond a community workshop.
