Brittany Horn was poised for change. She’d spent the last 40 days on leave from her supervisory job at Norton Hospital while undergoing addiction treatment in an Indiana recovery center.
She’d learned so much. But now she felt like someone who had swerved to miss a crash only to end up teetering on a cliff edge. She was behind on her rent and behind on her utility bill. The partial pay she received while on Family and Medical Leave covered only some of her expenses while she was in treatment. But her car was about to be repossessed. A month later, she totaled it. She still owed $6,600.
And she was back in the same environment that dragged her back into addiction after four years drug-free.
For all the self-discovery that treatment brought, this was real life: three kids – 11, 10 and 8 – a job, and creditors lining up for payment.
The old Brittany would have hidden in the bathroom to indulge in the drug that, when she was using, convinced her she was super-mom and super-employee.
This time, she came to UCHM.
Within 24 hours of contacting United Crescent Hill Ministries, she was approved for rental assistance. UCHM wasn’t at all what she had expected, she said. Usually asking for help requires at least one day off work. “Then you have to have all these printed-out documents of the kids’ birth certificates. It’s so much, you’re almost like, I would rather struggle and figure it out rather than ask for help. But at [UCHM] it was so smooth. Everybody was so nice.”
A few months later, she contacted United Crescent Hill Ministries again about her LG&E bill. Forty-eight hours later, she learned UCHM had covered more than $200 of her debt.
Free from the pressure of eviction and utility shut-off, Brittany finally had the stability she needed to plan for a better, safer future for her and her children.
“I remind myself that my kids and I deserve a better life with less chaos than the life with substance gave me.”

Mark your calendars, Louisville — Give for Good is coming on September 10th, and UCHM is ready to (politely, warmly, non-aggressively) ask you for your money!
Here's the math: 13 days from now, you'll either be:
🅰️ The generous human who helped fund rent assistance, food pantry shelves and programs for kids , OR
🅱️ Explaining to your future self why you didn't set a calendar reminder.
We recommend Option A. Historically, it comes with way less regret.
