🏡 GREAT WORK HAPPENED IN SMOKETOWN TODAY! ❤️

Today was truly a full-circle moment.

BATES Community Development Corporation. spearheaded the creation and development of Louisville’s first Community Land Trust — the Smoketown Community Land Trust(SCLT) — alongside our amazing partners, River City Housing, Kevin Dunlap Rebound Community Foundation of Louisville (RD), and Dunlap , Jason Webb!!

Today, it all became REAL as I sat at the closing table and watched a new homeowner sign the papers for her family’s new home right here in Smoketown! 🏡🔑

And then came the full-circle moment…she also enrolled her child in Bates CDC’s Kingdom Academy “Beyond the Bell” Afterschool Program! ❤️

Affordable homeownership + resources for the entire family — literally right outside your front door.

This is what community development looks like. This is what family stabilization looks like. And this is why we do the work.

Special flowers 💐 Smoketown Community Land Trust Executive Director Theresa Boyd for the phenomenal work being done to carry this vision forward!

And thank you to our Smoketown Originals Family(Booker T Washington /Jackson Jr. High) and founding community members who trusted the process and believed in what was possible for our neighborhood.

Today, we celebrate the HOMEOWNER, the FAMILY, the PARTNERSHIP, and the COMMUNITY! 🏡❤️

This is Smoketown. This is legacy. This is community development in action.

🍲 Food tells our history and we’re bringing that history to the Kentucky State Fair!

Join Change Today, Change Tomorrow at the KY State Fair as our Food Education Working Group shares the food history of August 8th Emancipation through a special Jambalaya food demonstration.

Come learn about the history, culture, and stories behind the food while enjoying a Jambalaya recipe with vegan and meat options available! 🌱🍗
