For Donna, an accessible bathroom means being able to safely meet a basic need in her own home.

Because of her disability, Donna could no longer safely access her shower, and her toilet was raised on a platform that made it difficult to use. Without an accessible shower at home, she had to drive to the YMCA every day just to bathe.

Through our home repair program, Donna’s bathroom was updated with a more accessible shower and toilet, making the space safer and easier for her to use independently.

Donna is also a foster mom and is just one payment away from paying off the home she has owned for 20 years. Now, these repairs are helping make sure her home can continue to work for her, too.

Home repairs like these can make an incredible difference in a homeowner’s safety, independence, and quality of life.

Yesterday, we celebrated an incredible milestone in Smoketown: the completion of Louisville Habitat’s 16-home commitment at Sheppard Square.

Since the first Louisville Habitat home was built here in 2020, 16 families have gained access to affordable homeownership and the opportunity to build greater financial security and generational wealth.

The celebration concluded with the dedication of our final Habitat home to Kaylah, a single mother and the first person in her family to purchase a home. For Kaylah, homeownership means creating a forever home for her daughter and opening the door to a new legacy for their family.

This milestone was made possible through our partnership with the Louisville Metro Housing Authority - LMHA, along with the support of countless volunteers, sponsors, partners, and neighbors.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this chapter at Sheppard Square possible. Together, we’re opening doors to lasting opportunity for families in Louisville.
