Interested in beautifying your yard and an easy way to help keep our waterways clean?

Consider planting native grasses, shrubs and trees this spring and summer. Prairie Dropseed grass is a great option! It's a native grass that can be part of a rain garden or used as an accent or ground cover.

Rain gardens help soak up stormwater, leading to improved water quality. Visit louisvillemsd.org/raingarden for everything you need to know about rain gardens.

Here's a look back at the construction of our Shawnee Park Flood Pumping Station in 1951.

This is one of 16 flood pumping stations that are part of our Ohio River flood protection system. The system protects more than 200,000 people, 137,000 structures, and $34 billion in property in Louisville.

The Bowl Patrol is on duty… and this did not pass inspection.
We recently found vapes, toys, fidgets, and other items like these in our system—and they don’t belong there. Only the 3 Ps—pee, poo, and toilet paper—should be flushed.

When the wrong items go down the drain, they can cause backups, damage equipment, and impact how we serve our community. Sticking to the 3 Ps is one simple way we can all help keep things flowing smoothly.

Our Ohio River flood protection system includes 80 roadway closures that are installed when the river is high. Crews follow a practice installation schedule set by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to ensure the closures can be installed smoothly during an active flood event.

This video was captured during the April 2025 flood in Louisville.

Hot, dry weather can contribute to sewer odors. If you smell something, say something by visiting louisvillemsd.org/odor. We can flush sewer lines with water and use deodorizers to mitigate odors.

The Mayor’s Hike, Bike & Paddle takes you through downtown Louisville and along the Ohio River—one of the best ways to enjoy our community outdoors.

Doing our part to keep our waterways clean helps make events like this even better. Simple things—like picking up trash, cleaning up after pets, and limiting our use of fertilizers—can make a big difference.
