The suspect tried to run away from police after they surrounded him at his home.

APD REMEMBERS: On, February 6, 1987, Sergeant Willie D. Cameron was shot and killed while working an extra job as a security guard at a department store in West End Mall. Sergeant Cameron had asked a man to leave the store but the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot him in the face.

The suspect was shot and killed minutes later by other officers.

Sergeant Cameron had served with the Atlanta Police Department for 20 years. He is survived by his wife and three children.
