“When we began researching our options, we assumed we would pursue either a traditional domestic adoption or possibly an international one. Embryo adoption was not something we had previously considered. That changed when we connected with Snowflakes.” Click the link below to read this family’s embryo adoption story on this week’s blog!

Deciding what to do with remaining embryos after IVF is not always simple. It can bring up tender emotions, meaningful questions, and a desire to make the choice that feels right for your family.

The Embryo Donation Decision Tool was created to gently guide couples as they think through their options, reflect on what matters most, and begin thoughtful conversations together.

This free guide gives you space to write things down, process your thoughts, and move forward with a little more peace and clarity.

Snowflakes Embryo Adoption was recently featured in a CNN video story highlighting embryo adoption and the more than one million embryos currently in storage. ❄️

Beth Button, Vice President of the Snowflakes Embryo Adoption Program, spoke with CNN about the heart behind embryo adoption, and Leesa Del Rio, Snowflakes Placing Parent Assistant, also appears alongside the Snowflakes team.

The story follows a family connected through Snowflakes and shares both the placing family’s and adopting family’s perspective. It offers a meaningful look at how embryo adoption can connect families while giving embryos in storage the opportunity for life.

We are thankful to see embryo adoption included in this important conversation and to continue helping more people understand this life-giving option.

Why would adopting parents choose embryo adoption instead of domestic adoption?

The most obvious difference between embryo adoption and domestic adoption is the pregnancy experience. Adoptive mothers are able to experience the joys (and challenges!) of pregnancy, prenatal bonding, and childbirth. They also have peace of mind knowing their children received the appropriate prenatal care and were not exposed to alcohol or drugs during pregnancy.

There are certain considerations involved in embryo adoption that are not present in domestic adoption. For instance: Embryo adoption does not ‘guarantee’ a live birth. On the other hand, adopting families are able to adopt larger sets of embryos through some agencies, giving them the opportunity for multiple frozen embryo transfer attempts.

There is always the risk in a domestic adoption that the birth parents will decide to become parents rather than placing for adoption. This risk does not exist with embryo adoption.

In addition, there is no need for a finalization hearing for the embryo adoptive family. The embryos, under U.S. law, are the legal property of the adoptive family before any embryo transfers are scheduled, and the placing parents have relinquished all parental rights.

Share your thoughts in the comments, or tag someone who may want to learn more about embryo adoption.

Mother’s Day is a meaningful time to recognize the many paths to motherhood.

Embryo adoption is a unique adoption option that allows remaining embryos to be placed with an adoptive family. For some hopeful moms, this can mean the opportunity to experience pregnancy, birth, and the bond of carrying their adopted child.

It is a path that combines adoption with pregnancy while giving remaining embryos the chance to continue growing in a loving family.

Finding the Right Embryo Adoption Program

Choosing the right program is a critical step in the process, so do your research before this all-important selection.

You may choose to work through a licensed adoption agency, such as the Snowflakes program, or through a fertility clinic donation program. Some programs are centrally managed, requiring you to travel to that location for procedures. Online matching programs are designed around self-matching. Managing the legal and clinic communications and more may be your responsibility. Some families find embryos through a friend or other connection. In these instances, the Snowflakes program is available to assist with the details to finalize the exchange of embryos legally.
