DANGEROUS HEAT THIS WEEK— Know the Warning Signs

Otsego County will see dangerously high temperatures this week. Heat-related illness can escalate quickly. Here’s how to tell the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

HEAT EXHAUSTION— Warning signs:
• Faintness or dizziness
• Heavy sweating
• Cool, pale, clammy skin
• Nausea or vomiting
• Rapid but weak pulse
• Muscle cramps

What to do: Move to a cool/air-conditioned space, sip water if fully conscious, and use cold compresses or a cool shower.

HEAT STROKE (MEDICAL EMERGENCY)— Warning signs:
• Throbbing headache
• No sweating
• Body temp above 103°F, red/hot/dry skin
• Nausea or vomiting
• Rapid, strong pulse
• Possible loss of consciousness

What to do: CALL 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY. Begin cooling the person right away (shade, remove excess clothing, cool water/ice packs) while waiting for help to arrive.

Stay hydrated, limit outdoor exertion during peak heat, check on elderly neighbors and pets, and never leave anyone in a parked vehicle.

Shower/ storm chances increase today and tonight, gradually ending heading through Thursday. Areas along and south of Grand Traverse Bay have the greatest threat for significant rains through Thursday. If you are planning outdoor activities, be sure to have a plan for heavy rain, lightning, and potentially some gusty winds.
