Lovelock Nevada

Lovelock Nevada The city of Lovelock is located off Interstate 80 in central Nevada and serves as the gateway to “Nevada’s Cowboy Country.” With a population of just over 2,300, the town is home to numerous historical sites and unique locations including Lovers Lock Plaza, the nation’s only love-locking destination.

Lovelock also serves as a base camp for adventure and activities including fishing, hunting, boating, hiking and geo-caching. The Pershing County Courthouse, built in 1919, is the only round courthouse in the USA that is in use daily. The Lovelock Train Depot was constructed in 1880 and is the only one of its style still in existence (now the Visitors Center).

Interesting! Mark Twain was in Unionville (Pershing County) for a short time too. His cabin is located at the park in Unionville.

We received a surprise visit from descendants of Mark Twain today who were surprised at how much history Mark made when he lived here in Carson City with his brother Orion.
Laura Cummins Gleason and her daughters Molly Gleason and Mary Katherine Gleason Seago with Nick Seago and son John Gleason stopped by the Chamber today for info and asked whether the Clemens House was still standing. That's how we learned this group of relatives is traveling here from Tennessee. The relationship extends from the mother's side.

We learned Mark Twain's father John, a lawyer, first settled in Gainesboro, TN where Orion (the former owner of the mansion at 502 N. Division Street) was born. They then moved to Jamestown, TN where two sisters,, Pamela and Margaret were born. Another brother Benjamin was born in Wolf River. Life was not as planned, so John moved the family at the behest of his sister to Florida, MO where Samuel (Mark Twain) was born.

We all know Mark Twain from his time in Carson City and Nevada and then on to Northern CA and Hawaii and beyond. He has roots all over the U.S., apparently and as one learns more and more about this great writer and true character, he becomes even more fascinating.

The history of the family connection to TN can be found by clicking here: http://www.josephinesjournal.com/twain.htm

I wouldn’t be the first to go looking for a Shangri-La in the Silver State. Mark Twain did so in “Roughing It.”

A fun message from Michael Adams:

My daughter tells me that she took those in September 2018. She was married to a guy who is a sports fanatic and they were going to a tournament of some kind in Reno. They stopped in Lovelock on the way back to Salt Lake City. The building that I think is the City offices is where my sister worked right out of high school (1953) and she learned great office skills which she used all her life. She's 85 now and our brother is 88; he left Lovelock right out of high school and signed up to be a Marine.
