PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT – Distracted Driving.

The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office is urging all drivers to stay focused behind the wheel.
Distracted driving includes any activity that takes your eyes, hands, or mind off the road — such as:

•Talking or texting on your phone.

•Eating, drinking, or reaching for items.

•Adjusting the radio, GPS, or entertainment system.

•Talking with passengers.

Texting while driving is especially dangerous. It combines visual, manual, and cognitive distractions. According to the NHTSA, reading or sending a text takes your eyes off the road for about 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that’s the length of a football field with your eyes closed.
In 2023 alone, 3,275 people were killed nationwide in distracted driving crashes.

Nevada Law Reminder:

Nevada Revised Statute 484B.165 prohibits the use of a cell phone or any handheld wireless communications device while operating a motor vehicle. This includes texting, emailing, browsing the internet, or any non-voice communication.

Safe driving is a shared responsibility — whether you’re a driver, passenger, or pedestrian.

Let’s all do our part to reduce crashes and save lives in Pershing County. Drive safe, Pershing County. Eyes on the road. Hands on the wheel. Mind on driving.

The Pershing County Sheriff's Office would like to extend our sincere condolences to Barb Hickox and the entire Hickox family for the loss of a great husband, father, grandfather and friend-Richard Hickox.

Sheriff Richard Hickox was a pillar of the Law Enforcement Community as well as a staunch protector and servant of Churchill County. Richard was a mentor to many in the Law Enforcement profession.

Richard was also a man of great Faith and loved his Family dearly. He will leave a void not easily filled, but his memories will last.

My staff and I want to offer our condolences to the men and women of the Churchill County Sheriff's Office as well and offer any support needed during this emotionally difficult time.

Rest in Peace, Friend, we have the watch from here!

Sheriff Jerry Allen

TRAFFIC ALERT: I-80 Westbound Diversion

At approximately 3:30 AM, Deputies responded to a semi-truck rollover near the 112 mile marker of Interstate 80.

Upon arrival, units located a semi-truck on its side, completely blocking the #1 and #2 lanes of westbound traffic.

🚧 Current Traffic Conditions:

Westbound I-80 is restricted. Deputies and NDOT (Nevada Department of Transportation) have diverted all westbound traffic off at the 112 exit into town.

Town Traffic:

Expect heavy congestion through town, specifically along Cornell Ave, as vehicles detour to the 105 on-ramp to re-enter the interstate.

🕒 What to Expect:

Nevada State Police are currently on-site conducting a crash investigation. Specialized tow crews are also working to safely upright the vehicle and clear debris from the roadway. We anticipate these delays will last for the next few hours.

Please drive with caution, watch for pedestrians in town, and allow extra travel time this morning.

We will provide updates as lanes begin to reopen. Thank you for your patience! 🚔🛣️
