Dennis the Menace.

If chaos had long ears and a fuzzy coat, it would be Dennis.

Dennis has never met a rule he couldn’t ignore, a fence he couldn’t investigate, or a situation he couldn’t somehow make more complicated. He may not have the best manners, and he certainly isn’t interested in anyone’s opinion on how he should behave, but that’s part of what makes him Dennis.

Here at ROAR, we don’t expect the animals to fit into neat little boxes. We don’t need Dennis to be calmer, quieter, or more obedient to deserve love. He gets to be exactly who he is—mischievous, stubborn, curious, and full of personality.

And honestly? The troublemakers usually steal our hearts the fastest.

So here’s to Dennis the Menace—proof that being a little difficult and a whole lot lovable can coexist perfectly.

Being white, Sugar’s pink skin—especially on her nose—is extremely sensitive to the Texas sun. While darker donkeys have natural pigment that offers some protection, Sugar can burn quickly, leaving her nose sore, peeling, and uncomfortable. We make sure she has the protection she needs to stay comfortable while enjoying life out in the pasture.

Sometimes caring for rescue animals isn’t about dramatic rescues or big medical procedures. Sometimes it’s as simple as making sure a white donkey has a sun mask so she can enjoy another beautiful day without getting burned.

And if Sugar had an opinion on the matter, she’d probably tell us the mask is acceptable… as long as it comes with treats.

At ROAR, we don’t measure success by how many animals can be touched or handled. We measure it in moments. The horse that finally relaxes. The donkey that follows behind you. The once-frightened animal that no longer feels the need to run away.

Trust is a gift. One that can never be demanded. Only earned.

That’s why some of my favorite moments aren’t the big ones. They’re the quiet moments when an animal simply chooses my company. No treats. No halter. No expectations. Just existing together in the same space.

Those moments remind me that love isn’t ownership. It isn’t control. It isn’t making an animal do what you want.

Love is giving them the freedom to choose.

And when they choose you anyway, after everything they’ve been through, there is no greater compliment.

Poncho doesn’t want to be petted, and that’s perfectly okay.

Some of the deepest bonds aren’t built through touch—they’re built through trust. When Poncho first arrived at ROAR, getting within twenty feet of him felt like a victory. Now he’ll walk right up, not because he’s been trained to, not because he’s expecting something, but because he knows he’ll always be respected.

Everything with Poncho happens on his terms.

He’s curious, thoughtful, and while he’ll never turn down a cookie, I’ve learned that most of the time he’s not hanging around for treats. He stays for the company. Whether I’m working in the pasture or crawling under a car changing brakes, Poncho is usually nearby, quietly supervising and making sure everything is being done correctly.

He’s also the first one to step up when his herd needs him. Calm, steady, and protective, Poncho watches over those he cares about without hesitation.

Poncho was one of the very first donkeys to arrive at ROAR, and in many ways, he’s one of the donkey who made us fall in love with donkeys. He showed us that trust doesn’t have to look like cuddles and affection. Sometimes trust looks like simply choosing to stand beside someone.

And every time Poncho chooses to stand beside me, I consider it an honor. ❤️🫏

One of the greatest gifts this rescue has given me is the incredible people I’ve met along the way.

Carolyn is so much more than a supporter. As many of you know, we’ve faced our share of challenges over the years. Through it all, Carolyn never lost sight of what truly matters: the animals. While others focused on rumors, drama, and negativity, she continued caring about the horses and donkeys that needed us.

After following the rescue for several years from Canada, Carolyn finally got to visit in person. She was able to meet the horses and donkeys she’s watched grow through photos and videos, give them treats, brush them, love on them, and experience firsthand the personalities she’s come to know from afar.

One of the most special moments was meeting Hershey. Carolyn had the honor of naming Aiyanna’s son, and now she was finally able to meet the handsome boy in person. Watching that connection come full circle was something truly special.

To Carolyn, and to all of the supporters who have stood by the animals through every challenge, thank you. Thank you for seeing past the noise. Thank you for believing in these horses and donkeys. Thank you for understanding that the animals have always been, and always will be, the reason we do this.

Life at ROAR isn’t about training horses to fit our expectations or forcing relationships they don’t want. It’s about giving them the freedom to choose their own path.

If a horse wants attention, we’re here for it. If they want space, they get that too.

Kateri has chosen a life with a little distance between us, and I respect that. She can stay as wild as she likes while still living a life that is safe, cared for, and free.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t trust.

When she needs veterinary care, hoof trims, or transportation, we’ve loaded her, guided her through a chute, and handled every necessary task in ways that minimize stress and preserve her confidence. While I may never be able to walk up and put my hands on her in the middle of the pasture, we’ve built an understanding between us.

Trust doesn’t always look like a horse running to greet you at the gate.

Sometimes trust looks like a mare standing watch over her growing boy, knowing the humans nearby will respect her boundaries, protect her family, and ask nothing more of her than she’s willing to give.

And honestly, that’s a pretty special kind of trust.

One of the most rewarding parts of rescue isn’t watching a horse survive—it’s watching them finally feel safe enough to thrive.

Braveheart has gone from uncertainty and fear to confidence and connection, and seeing him become the horse he was always meant to be has been an incredible journey.

Today he’s not just surviving.

He’s living.

And he’s absolutely beautiful.

Look at that hair 🤣

The wind has been crazy! The weather is always changing here in Texas.

One thing that’s never changed is Buttercup and Wachiwi’s love for their baby.

Walker may be growing up, but he’s still surrounded by the same love that has always watched over him. Buttercup on one side, Wachiwi on the other—two mothers who have spent every day making sure he was safe, loved, and never alone.

Not every horse gets the gift of one devoted mom. Walker got two.

How lucky is this boy to grow up knowing he is cherished from both sides, with two mares who have always made him their priority. No matter how big he gets, he’ll always be their baby.

Frankie Update 🖤

Look at this boy.

Full of curiosity. Full of confidence. Full of life.

Frankie spends his days exploring the pasture, investigating everything he can find, and growing more independent with each passing day. The best part? He’s never known a cruel hand. He’s never known hunger, fear, or uncertainty.

Instead, he’s known safety.

He’s known green grass beneath his feet, sunshine on his back, and a mother who is always close by.

Freddie watches over him while he discovers the world, giving him the freedom to be brave while always being there when he needs her.

Seeing a baby grow up never knowing the hardships so many horses face is something truly special.

Keep being curious, Frankie.
