Today is Juneteenth, commemorating June 19, 1865, when it was announced in Galveston, Texas that enslaved people would no longer be legally held in bo***ge. This announcement came nearly three years after the Emancipation Proclamation was first decreed on September 22, 1862.
While we are unable to celebrate this holiday as we had originally planned, with a walk celebrating Juneteenth through exploring the abolition and antislavery movements in Lowell, we do want to celebrate this momentous day and point you towards a local celebration that our walk leader, Jacquelynn Coles of DIY Lowell, is planning tomorrow at St. Anne's Episcopal Church. Celebrate this historic day with community members and enjoy a social distancing walk outside!
In addition, our friends at the Free Soil Arts Collective (one of our walk leaders we had planned for July) will be holding an artist talk tomorrow at 12 noon with textile artist Karen Hampton of Western Avenue Studios & Lofts to celebrate Juneteenth.
