πŸ“’ Community Advisory: Public Safety Training Exercise

The City of Lowell will participate in an oil spill training exercise in the Merrimack River today, September 2, and tomorrow, September 3, 2026.

This coordinated training involves participation from:
β€’ U.S. Coast Guard
β€’ U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
β€’ Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
β€’ Lowell Fire Department

The exercise will take place on the river itself as well as in adjacent areas, including:
β€’ Rourke Boat Ramp
β€’ Sampas Boat Launch
β€’ Beaver Brook
β€’ Hunts Falls Bridge

This is a regular training exercise designed to help participating agencies prepare for and coordinate a response to an oil spill in the river. Residents and visitors may see emergency personnel and equipment in these areas during the exercise.

πŸ“’ Community Advisory: West Nile Virus Detected in Lowell Mosquitoes; Preventative Spraying Scheduled for Tonight, Wednesday, September 2

The Massachusetts Dept of Public Health has confirmed that West Nile Virus (WNV) has been detected in mosquitoes collected in Lowell.

As a preventative measure, the City has requested street-level mosquito spraying in the area where the mosquito was identified. Spraying is scheduled for tonight, Wednesday, September 2, from 8:30 - 11:00PM.

πŸ“ Spray Area (see map): Autumn St, Ayer Ave, Blossom Ct, Blossom St, Boston Rd, Canada St, Cottage Pl, Court St, Cunningham St, Eaton St, Fruit St, Lincoln St, London St, Main St, Manchester St, Maple St, Marriner St, Marshall Rd, Massasoit St, Mechanics St, Montreal St, New Way, Penn Ave, Plain St, Poplar St, Quebec St, Spencer St, Tanner St, Waldo St, W. London St, W. Manchester St

Residents in the spray area should:
β€’ Close street-facing windows and keep pets indoors between sunset and midnight, if possible
β€’ Remain indoors during spraying and for 15-20 minutes afterward
β€’ Turn off "outside air" controls on older window-unit air conditioners
β€’ Wash garden vegetables before eating them

There is no need for special precautions the day after spraying, as any residue will have evaporated.

Residents can also help reduce their risk of WNV by using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors, avoiding peak mosquito activity from dusk to dawn, and removing standing water around their homes.

Thank you to The Megan House Foundation, Inc. and the Lowell Health Department for partnering to bring community members and local organizations together to remember those we have lost, support those who are struggling, and connect people with resources.

Thank you to Vinfen , Riverbend Merrimack Valley, The Bridge Club of Greater Lowell, Lowell Community Health Center, the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, and Lowell Police Department (Official) for participating and the work you do everyday throughout our community.

International Overdose Awareness Day is a time to remember the people we have lost and acknowledge the families, friends, and communities impacted by overdose. Behind every statistic is a story - a person who was loved, known, and missed.

As we begin Recovery Month, we continue to recognize those in recovery and the people who support them. If you or someone you know is struggling with substance use, you are not alone, and there are resources available.

The City of Lowell Department of Planning & Development (DPD) is thrilled to announce it has received a $2.5 million climate resilience grant to construct the second phase of improvements at Saint Louis Sponge Park in Lowell’s Centralville neighborhood!

Saint Louis Sponge Park is located at 406 West 6th St within an urban heat island and an area prone to flooding during heavy rain events. Phase 2 converts an under-utilized baseball field into a one-of-a-kind outdoor climate classroom featuring an artist-designed sun/rain shelter, multilingual educational signage, social gathering spaces, event space, seating, lighting, rain gardens, tree planting, and native perennials.

πŸ“’ Parking Advisory: Overnight Pavement Marking Work

The City's pavement marking contractor is scheduled to begin overnight work on Sunday, August 30, and Monday, August 31, weather permitting, to paint centerlines and lane lines.

Work is expected to take place from approximately 8:00PM to 3:00AM, and localized traffic impacts may occur.

The following streets may require temporary parking restrictions to allow the contractor's equipment to maneuver:
β€’ Beacon St
β€’ E. Merrimack St
β€’ Central St
β€’ Walker St

πŸš«πŸ…ΏοΈ No-parking signs will be posted in advance of this work. Please follow posted restrictions and plan accordingly.

Please note: Vehicles must be removed from affected streets during work hours. Parked vehicles may prevent the contractor from safely maneuvering equipment and completing the pavement marking work. Vehicles parked in posted no-parking areas may be towed at the owner's expense. Please make alternative parking arrangements during work hours.

Additional pavement marking, including crosswalks and roadway symbols, will continue through September.
