Mass Parks Student Career Intake Program SCIP SCIP: Home Grown and Growing

The Mass Parks Student Career Intake Program (SCIP)

Intake students are hired as STEP employees and work 40 hours per week for ten weeks during the summer. Three days are spent traveling to area parks to interact directly with professionals from a variety of career paths. Interns work the remaining two days in their host park site gaining more personalized and in-depth career experience in their chosen field. Returning second-year students work 40

hours per week in their host park sites focusing on their chosen field and serve as mentors for the incoming students. By the third season it is anticipated these interns will transition to SCEP positions within their host park. In 2010, SCIP interns visited 17 park sites, met individually with over 100 permanent and seasonal NPS employees, partners, VIPs and interns representing careers in Law Enforcement, Administration, Management, Interpretation, Education, Maintenance, Traditional Arts, and Natural Resources and led the Lowell Youth Summit with 170 youth from 12 different summer service programs in Massachusetts attending.
