The Lake Champlain Basin Program, a NEIWPCC program partner, seeks proposals for wetland and floodplain restoration projects in the New York portion of the Lake Champlain Basin. Approximately $1.3 million in funding is available to support awarded projects, and proposals are due on July 15.

Did you know that the Friday before Memorial Day weekend each year is observed as Long Island Sound Day? The occasion recognizes the environmental, recreational, and economic importance of the Sound right before the unofficial start of summer begins.

NEIWPCC assists the Long Island Sound Partnership with implementing a management plan for the Sound that includes research, monitoring, public education, and outreach. One aspect of this work is the Nutrient Bioextraction Initiative, which was created to determine if the growing and harvesting of shellfish and seaweed can be used to make meaningful reductions in nitrogen levels in the Sound.

The Long Island Sound Partnership, a NEIWPCC program partner, released its 2026 forecast for hypoxia in the Sound, projecting another year of relatively limited levels of low-oxygen conditions in the Sound’s bottom waters!

The Long Island Garden Rewards Program is now open for its fourth season! The initiative provides financial reimbursements of up to $500 for property owners in Suffolk and Nassau County, New York who partake in water saving projects in their yards, such as rain gardens, native plantings, and rain barrels. By capturing rainwater and slowing down runoff, these projects reduce the amount of water flowing across a yard and help decrease the level of nitrogen pollution entering local water ways.

The Program is a collaborative effort between NEIWPCC, the Long Island Regional Planning Council, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Long Island Sound Partnership, and the South Shore Estuary Reserve.
