***PRESS RELEASE***
ATTEMPTED MURDER
OF A POLICE OFFICER
On April 1st, 2026, at approximately 09:47 a.m., an officer of the Lowell Police Department was flagged down by a business owner regarding a suspicious person openly drinking alcohol in the 100 block of Deanna Drive. The Lowell Police Department had previously responded to an alarm call in the same vicinity of the incident and did not locate any person(s) in the area at that time. The officer then checked the area where he located Ethan Patrick Meyer, 26 years old of Lowell, IN, near the business of the previous alarm. Upon exiting his police vehicle and in full police uniform, he attempted to make verbal contact with Meyer. Meyer then turned towards the officer and pulled out a large kitchen knife from the waistband of his pants and began to run towards the officer yelling, “I’m going to fu***ng kill you". A physical altercation ensued and both Meyer and the officer fell to the ground. During the altercation, Meyer attempted to stab the officer in the back of his neck and the blade contacted the shirt collar of the officer. The officer grabbed the hand of Meyer containing the knife and prevented any further attempts to stab him. Meyer lost possession of the knife and it fell out of reach. Meyer repeated several times, “I’m going to kill you” as they fought on the ground. Meyer then grabbed the duty weapon of the officer and attempted to remove it from its holster. The officer prevented Meyer from removing the weapon. At this time, good Samaritans assisted the officer in taking Meyer into custody. Multiple witness statements and surveillance footage was secured that captured the incident. The officer was treated on scene for minor injuries. The following charges were accepted by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office against Meyer:

COUNT I-[ATTEMPTED MURDER ( Level 1 Felony)]
COUNT II-[BATTERY BY MEANS OF A DEADLY WEAPON ( Level 5 Felony)]
COUNT III-[INTIMIDATION ( Level 5 Felony)]
COUNT IV-[RESISTING LAW ENFORCEMENT ( Level 5 Felony)]
COUNT V-[RESISTING LAW ENFORCEMENT ( Level 5 Felony)]
COUNT VI-[DISARMING A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER ( Level 5 Felony)]

We are thankful our officer did not sustain serious injuries in the attack. We will formally thank the good Samaritans for their bravery at a later date.

Just a reminder that the Lowell Police Department will never call you to solicit money for any cause. There have been recent fraud attempts using a spoofed telephone number portraying the caller to be from our agency. If you receive such a call, do not provide any information and contact your local law enforcement agency to report the incident.
