Carbon Monoxide & Generator Safety PSA

⚠️ Carbon Monoxide: The Invisible Killer ⚠️

Power outages often lead people to use generators, but improper use can have deadly consequences. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that can build up quickly and cause serious illness or death.

Portable Generator Safety:
✅ Always operate portable generators outdoors only.
✅ Keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home, garage, doors, windows, and vents.
✅ Never use a portable generator inside a house, garage, basement, crawl space, or enclosed porch—even with doors or windows open.
✅ Never connect a portable generator directly to your home's electrical system unless it is installed with a proper transfer switch by a qualified electrician.
✅ Install and maintain carbon monoxide alarms throughout your home.

What about whole-home generators?

🏠 Whole-home standby generators are different. They are permanently installed outside and are designed to supply power to your home's electrical system automatically during an outage. They must be properly installed, vented, maintained, and inspected according to the manufacturer's instructions and local codes.

⚠️ Never operate a whole-home generator in a garage, shed, or other enclosed area. Keep the generator and its exhaust system clear of windows, doors, vents, and other openings where exhaust could enter the home.

Know the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning:
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Weakness
• Nausea or vomiting
• Confusion
• Loss of consciousness

If your CO alarm sounds or you suspect carbon monoxide is present, get everyone outside into fresh air immediately and call 911.

Whether you're using a portable generator or a professionally installed whole-home generator, generator safety saves lives.

🚒 Your local fire department reminds you: Keep generators outside. Keep carbon monoxide out. Stay safe.

Today, The Lake Dalecarlia Volunteer Fire Department mourns the loss of one of our own.

After many years of dedicated service to both the Beford Park IL and Lake Dalecarlia Volunteer Fire Department, we say goodbye to Bill Allen, whose commitment, courage, and selflessness left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of serving alongside him. Bill answered countless calls, stood ready in times of crisis, and dedicated his life to protecting others.
The uniform may now be at rest, but the legacy of service, honor, and sacrifice will never be forgotten. His example will continue to inspire future generations of firefighters.
Please keep his family, friends, and fellow firefighters in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Rest easy, brother. We'll take it from here.

ROAD CLOSURE - State Road 55 in Lake County

An intersection improvement project will begin at State Road 2 and the west junction of State Road 55 on or after Wednesday, August 12.

State Road 55 will be closed to the north of State Road 2 to 179th Pl during construction, with no access to State Road 2. Motorists should seek alternate routes. The official detour will follow U.S. 231, I-65 and State Road 2. State Road 2 will remain one lane in each direction at the intersection, but travel lanes will be narrowed and shifted south to make room for the work zone.

Intersection improvements will include dedicated turn lanes, resurfacing, signage and pavement markings. Construction will be ongoing through mid-October.

Yes the Weather Siren is activated again.
Understanding severe weather alerts is crucial for community safety. When weather patterns shift, new alerts are issued to keep everyone informed. These alerts serve as vital warnings, providing crucial time to seek shelter. Staying updated on weather advisories ensures preparedness for potential hazards. We must remain vigilant and responsive to all reoccurring alerts.
