Numbers come alive in Karla Byrne's kindergarten classroom at Murray Lake Elementary! This week, students are building number sense through hands on learning stations that let them touch, move, and see math in action.

Research shows young learners grasp math concepts best when they can physically manipulate objects rather than just watch or listen. Hands on learning turns abstract ideas like "five" or "more than" into something kids can hold, stack, and compare, building a foundation that sticks.

Becky Devito's class at Alto Elementary is settling into their routines and it shows. Students are building strong independent reading habits, choosing books that interest them, and sticking with them.

Independent reading time gives students the chance to practice skills at their own pace, build stamina, and most importantly, fall in love with a good story. Whether it's flipping through a picture book or getting lost in a chapter book, this quiet time is helping our Red Arrows grow as readers.

While our students have the day off, our teachers are spending it in professional development. Check out our elementary crew focused on writing instruction using the Open Court curriculum. This training helps our teachers strengthen strategies for teaching students to become confident, skilled writers.

The 2026-27 academic year is underway! Our once-quiet halls are now teeming with students and staff, and everything that makes LAS what it is. Whether this is your first year in our district or your last, we are so happy to welcome you back!

Tomorrow is the first day of school, and we're so excited to welcome students back!

With any first day comes a little bit of chaos, and that's okay. We have kindergarteners learning the ropes for the very first time, new routes and detours to navigate, and everyone (students, staff, and parents) settling back into the routine.

A few reminders as you get ready tonight: set those alarms, lay out first day outfits, and make sure backpacks are loaded and ready to go by the door.

Please be patient with us tomorrow. Buses may be running a few minutes behind schedule as drivers get familiar with new stops and riders. Drop off and pick up lines may take a little longer than usual. Traffic near our buildings will be heavier than a typical school day.

Our staff will be out in full force to help students find their way, and we appreciate your patience and grace as we all ease into the new school year together.

Here's to a great first day, Red Arrows!

As we sit on the edge of the 2026-27 school year, we are embracing a simple but powerful idea: Believe Every Day Matters.

It's easy to think of big milestones as the moments that shape us, first day of kindergarten, a state championship, graduation day. But growth doesn't happen only on the big days. It happens in ordinary Tuesday classrooms, quiet conversations with a teacher, a hard problem finally solved, a new friend made at lunch.

For our students, this theme is a reminder that showing up matters. Effort matters. Attendance matters. Kindness matters. The days that feel unremarkable are often building the skills and confidence that carry them into whatever comes next.

For our staff, families, and community, it's an invitation to notice those small moments too, and to help make each day count for the students in our care.

Every day is a chance to learn something, grow a little, and become who you're meant to be. We believe every day matters, because our students matter every day.
