Music students in Colleen Paiz's class at Murray Lake Elementary are getting into the Halloween spirit while learning the ostinato, using the eerie tale "There Was an Old Woman" to keep the beat going.

An ostinato is a short musical pattern, either a rhythm or a melody, that repeats over and over throughout a piece. The word comes from Italian and means "stubborn," because the pattern sticks around!

Students might clap, chant, play a drum, or tap out the pattern on xylophones while the story or song unfolds over the top.

It's a favorite tool in elementary music classrooms for good reason. Repeating a pattern helps students build a steady beat, strengthen timing, and listen closely to one another. Holding their part while something different happens around them teaches focus and confidence, and layering several ostinatos together gives students their first taste of harmony and playing as an ensemble.

Kris Covelle's 7th grade Creative Communications students wrapped up their Letter Writing unit with a walking field trip to the Lowell Post Office. Staff gave the students a behind-the-scenes look at how mail is sorted and sent on its way, explained how PO Boxes work, and then watched as each student stamped and mailed the letter they had written.

In a world of texts and quick DMs, a handwritten letter still matters. Letter writing is an art: choosing the right greeting, finding the words that fit the person reading them, and taking the time to say something worth keeping. It teaches students to slow down, organize their thoughts, and write with care. Those are skills they will carry into job applications, thank-you notes, and every important message they ever send. And there is nothing quite like the moment someone opens their mailbox and finds a letter with their name on it.

The chicks are here! Students in Animal Science and Ag Bio have welcomed their birds to kick off the FFA Broiler Contest.

Throughout the project, students will keep detailed records, provide daily care, and put together a report covering bird care, financials, and the reasoning behind the practices they use. It's hands-on learning that connects animal welfare, business, and science in a real way.

The lesson, “Earth & Me & Ecology” at the Wittenbach/Wege Agriscience and Environmental Center, had students exploring the earth beneath their feet and then working to help it thrive.

As they traipsed through the woods, students learned about soil, plants, the life cycle and how they can protect the planet.

The LHS Theater Department is deep in rehearsals for this fall's production of "Ghostlight" by Stephen Gregg.

Garbiela Nettles never wanted to attend the elite Doves Forge Academy, and she's ready to get herself kicked out. Then she starts hearing sounds no one else can hear, echoes of a tragedy that happened in the school's theater long ago. To get to the bottom of it, she joins the school play (which is a total disaster) and uncovers a story that's equal parts funny, surprising and genuinely moving.

Expect laugh-out-loud characters, twists you won't see coming and a few moments where you might just become part of the show yourself.

Catch Ghostlight at the Lowell Performing Arts Center on Thursday, Oct. 29, Friday, Oct. 30 and Sunday, Nov. 1. Tickets will be available online soon!

Students in Stacey Reynolds' AP Psychology class at Lowell High School recently put their knowledge of the brain to the test in a creative way. For this project, they mapped the brain parts and functions they've been studying onto the traits of a real celebrity or fictional character.

The twist? They had to exaggerate certain areas of the brain to show which characteristics are stronger or weaker based on their character's personality and skills. Think a supersized amygdala for a famously dramatic character, or an oversized motor cortex for a star athlete!

Students earned bonus points for dressing as their character, bringing in themed food, or adding a 3D element, and they did not disappoint
