Anderson Marsh State Historic Park is located at the southeast corner of Clear Lake, at the formation of Cache Creek, on Hwy 53 between the Cities of Lower Lake and Clearlake, in Lake County, California. Clear Lake is the largest natural lake wholly within the borders of California, and one of the oldest lakes in North America. The Park consists of over 1000 acres and contains archeological sites

of the Southeastern Pomo Native Americans that are at least 10,000 years old, as well as the original 19th Century Ranch House and Barn complex that was constructed and used by the earliest European settlers in the area. The Park also includes a nature preserve that embraces hundreds of acres of valuable wildlife habitat and Tule marsh, with one of the largest Great Blue Heron rookeries on Clear Lake. There are hiking and boating trails that allow the visitor to experience several protected habitats within the Park, including freshwater marsh, oak woodland, grasslands and riparian woodland. AMIA is committed to protecting the public’s access to the natural beauty and rich cultural history that is contained within Anderson Marsh State Historic Park, as well improving and expanding the recreational and educational opportunities offered at the Park. A large crowd of about 120 people started off the New Year right with a walk in the park as part of the Anderson Marsh State Historic Park's 10th Annual "First Day Hike." We divided into three groups on two different routes led by State Parks Interpreter Andy Carpenter, retired State Parks Ranger Tom Nixon and volunteer State Parks Docent Henry Bornstein. Also helping with the hikes were AMIA volunteers John Portner, Joe Lundergreen and G*e Henry. Special thanks to AMIA volunteers Jon Henderson and Gordon Haggitt, who got the cars safely into the parking lot.

Also special thanks to State Parks Rangers Trevor Irace, James Morris and Chris Glenn, who attended the event and gave us support.

It was a beautiful day and we are looking forward to another wonderful year at our favorite State Park!

SENIOR DAYS EVENTS CONTINUE ON SATURDAY, JUNE 29

The series of “Senior Days” events at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park especially designed for Lake County Seniors will continue on Saturday, June 29 with two special programs: the unique nature of Clear Lake and the history of the indigenous people of the Clear Lake basin

The morning program will feature Angela De Palma-Dow, a water resources scientist who lives in Lake County and manages numerous projects with state, city, tribal and federal agencies designed to protect the ecology of Clear Lake. Angela will give an entertaining and informative presentation explaining the special and unique nature of Clear Lake. How old is the Lake? Why is it green? Why is it so shallow? All will be made ‘clear’ by Angela!

In the afternoon, well-known local archaeologist John Parker, who spearheaded the effort to preserve Anderson Marsh State Historic Park, will give an entertaining talk about the history of the indigenous people of Lake County and the variety of indigenous communities that have inhabited the Clear Lake Basin.

Information about the Senior Days events and how to register can be found at andersonmarsh.org.

“Senior Days” programs continue on June 15 at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park

Morning: "Active Geology" - volcanoes, landslides & geysers

Afternoon: "Trees and tree care" - native trees in Lake County, trees to plant, trees not to plant and care of your trees at home.
The series of “Senior Days” events at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park continue on Saturday, June 15.

The morning program will feature Chris Watt, a geologist who has worked as an Interpretive Ranger with the National Park Service at the Grand Canyon and as Field Naturalist with the United States Geological Survey. Chris will give an entertaining presentation about what he calls the "active geology"of Lake County - its volcanoes, landslides and geysers. There are a few places left for this program, so use the link below to register if you wish to attend.

In the afternoon, Greg Giusti, a local biologist who specializes in trees and forest management, will lead a discussion and “Q&A” session about the trees we see as we drive around Lake County, which trees to plant and how to take care of your trees at home. Giusti is Forests & Wildland Ecology Advisor-Emeritus to the University of California Division of Natural Resources Cooperative Extension.

Giusti will present a talk with lots of time for questions and answers. There will be the chance to ask any questions you may have about trees you see in the wild, home landscaping, or garden tree care.

So, if you have questions about the trees around you, tree disease or how to deal with an unruly tree in your garden, this is the perfect opportunity to get them answered by an expert.

To register for one or both of the June 15 events, or any other future Senior Days events, visit AMIA's website at https://andersonmarsh.org.

Time will be available between the morning and afternoon sessions to bring and enjoy a picnic lunch under the big Valley Oak in the picnic area.

SENIOR DAYS RETURNS TO ANDERSON MARSH STATE HISTORIC PARK

After the success of last year’s Senior Days, AMIA is bringing back a new version of the Senior Days events for 2024.

Programs will be both fun and educational and range from getting up close and personal with live hawks, learning about what is going on with Clear Lake, the history and culture of the Indigenous people of Anderson Marsh and Lake Count, the history of the European immigrants at Anderson Marsh and tours of the park and South Barn Interpretive Center.

In order to provide the opportunity for as many people as possible to participate, separate registrations will be required for each morning or afternoon session and registration will be limited to four sessions per person. There will be a $5 registration fee for each session.

Time will be available after the morning session and before the afternoon session to bring and enjoy a picnic lunch under the big Valley Oak in the picnic area.

We encourage all Lake County seniors to visit our website at https://andersonmarsh.org, take a look at the different programs and register to attend the ones that interest them.

2024 Guided Nature Walks at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park

Guided nature walks at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park will be held on the second Saturday of each month in 2024. The leisurely walks are led by volunteer State Parks docents over a 3-mile trail over mostly level terrain.

The walks begin at 8:30am. There is no charge for the guided nature walks and parking is free for those attending. No pets are permitted on the park trails.

The next guided nature walk is scheduled for Saturday, February 10. The February nature walk will be led by Henry Bornstein, a certified California Naturalist and volunteer State Parks Docent.

Everyone is invited to take a walk in the park and experience the benefits of getting out into nature for some healthy exercise. The first half mile of the nature walk over the Cache Creek Nature Trail is ADA accessible. Rain will cancel the walk.

BIG CROWD ATTENDED THE FIRST DAY HIKE!

On New Year’s Day, over one hundred people decided to get a healthy start to 2024 by participating in the tenth annual First Day Hike held at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park. Hikers of all ages enjoyed a beautiful, sunny day in the park, and ranged from “old timers” who regularly hike in the park to first time visitors.

The First Day Hike at Anderson Marsh has become a Lake County tradition. With the exception of 2021, which was canceled due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the First Day Hikes at the park have attracted over 100 attendees for each of the past ten years. To allow folks to “sleep in” on New Year’s Day, the hikes begin at noon.

The hike this year covered a three-mile loop on the park’s trail system and was led by an all-volunteer team of State Park Docents. The hikers were divided into two groups to accommodate the large number of visitors, with each group starting in a different direction and passing each other in the middle of the hike.

State Park staff and volunteers at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park are looking forward to the start of another year of guided nature walks at the park, culminating with next year’s First Day Hike on January 1, 2025!

11/01/2023

Join us for a Guided Nature Walk at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park on Saturday, November 11th, beginning at 8:30am. This will be the final Guided Nature Walk for 2023.

The November nature walk will be led by Henry Bornstein. Henry is a volunteer State Parks Docent and a Certified California Naturalist. The route taken on the walk will depend on the condition of the trails. The hike should last between 1½ and 2 hours.

Bring binoculars and meet in the parking lot at 8:15am for time to experience the early morning wildlife that can be found in the Ranch House and Barn complex yard – the walk will begin at 8:30am. Sturdy shoes, a hat and water are also suggested.

There is no charge for the Guided Nature Walk and parking is free for those attending.
