We're officially 5 days away from the tax filing deadline! If you need more time to prepare your tax return, there are three ways you may request an automatic tax-filing extension:
1. Make a payment by accessing your IRS Individual Online Account and indicate the payment is for an extension.
2. E-file your extension form for free using IRS Free File.
3. File your extension form by mail (make sure to keep a copy & send it using a method with tracking, for example Certified Mail, Return Receipt Requested).
⭐️ Note: An extension to FILE is NOT an extension to PAY. An extension to file only prevents late filing penalties. If you owe and don't pay by April 15th, the IRS will still add late payment penalties even if you submit the tax filing extension.
⭐️ Note: You must submit your request for tax-filing extension on or before April 15, 2024.
⭐️ Note: The extension to file gives you until October 15, 2024, to file your 2023 tax return. If you do not file the tax return by that date, the IRS will add penalties for late filing.
