Communities in Schools - South Plains

Communities in Schools - South Plains Bridging the gap between home and school for students to succeed both in school and beyond since 1999 ๐ŸŒŸ The five Communities in Schools basics:
1.

A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult;
2. A safe place to learn and grow;
3. A healthy start and a healthy future;
4. A marketable skill to use upon graduation; and
5. A chance to give back to peers and community. Communities in Schools - South Plains uses evidence-based programs and services that address the academic, non-academic, cognitive, and social and emotional factors that directly

affect students' ability to persist and be successful not only in school, but throughout their lives. Founded in Lubbock in 1999 and chartered by the national Communities in Schools office in 2000, Communities in Schools - South Plains has increased the number of children served from approximately 100 on three campuses in 1999-2000 to over 2,100 on 54 campuses during the 2015-2016 school year.

September is Attendance Awareness Month, but attendance is about more than a number on a report.

Every day in school gives students another opportunity to learn, build relationships and keep moving toward what's next. When something outside the classroom makes showing up harder, our Site Coordinators are already inside schools, ready to listen, understand what's getting in the way and connect students and families with support! ๐Ÿ“šโœจ

New research from Harvard and Cornell confirms what we see every day: consistent, personalized support can make a lasting difference in a studentโ€™s life.

Monthly donors help make that support possible. Your ongoing gift helps CIS Site Coordinators show up for students across the South Plains with caring relationships, essential resources and individualized support throughout the school year.

Become a monthly donor and invest in support proven to help students succeed, month after month. ๐Ÿ’›https://cissouthplains.org/donate/

Weโ€™re so excited to announce our partnership with the South Plains Food Bank to help stock campus pantries with nutritious food and snacks throughout the school year, providing additional support for students and their families! ๐ŸŽโœจ

Partnerships like this are what make our work possible. By bringing community resources directly into schools, we can help students get what they need to focus on learning, growing, and reaching their potential.

Congratulations, Kim! This recognition is so well deserved, and we are incredibly proud to have you on our team! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’™

Here's what they said! โžก๏ธ

From her nominator Cynthia Berlanga: โ€œMs. Kim is the true definition of a Community Hero. In her role as the Community in Schools Coordinator at Honey Elementary, she brings joy, compassion, and hope to every family she encounters. Her beautiful smile and positive spirit are contagious, but it is her heart for people that truly sets her apart.

Ms. Kim goes far beyond the walls of the classroom to make sure students and their families feel supported, valued, and cared for. Whether she is organizing snack bags for families, building meaningful relationships with parents and students, connecting families with resources, or making sure children experience the magic of Christmas when their families may be struggling, Ms. Kim consistently finds ways to show up for her community.
What makes Ms. Kim so special is the way she meets every family exactly where they are. With love, kindness, compassion, and absolutely no judgment, she creates a safe space where families can ask for help without fear or embarrassment. She reminds people that they matter and that they are not alone.

Her work may not always make the headlines, but the impact she makes is felt every single day. She is the person who notices when someone needs a little extra support, the person who finds a way to help, and the person who brings a little more light into the lives of the families she serves.

Ms. Kim doesnโ€™t simply coordinate community resources, she builds community. She strengthens families, encourages students, supports staff, and inspires everyone around her through her generosity and genuine love for others.

For all of these reasons and so many more, Ms. Kim Trevino-Herrera is the ultimate Community Hero. Honey Elementary and the families she serves are incredibly fortunate to have someone who gives so much of herself to make a difference."

๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿคฉ Congratulations to Kim Trevino-Herrera, our Community Hero winner! ๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿคฉ
