K12 traveled to Irons Middle School on Wednesday for an Otomi on the Road program with 8th-grade students in Mrs. Ibanez's Spanish class. Students learned about the geography and culture of Mexico. Those attending learned how the Otomi people make paper, which the Nahua people would then use to paint artwork on. The artwork was later used as a way to allow both sides to profit from selling their artwork.

Last Thursday, our K12 team closed out our Cinco programs at the ICC with kindergartners from Brown Elementary and students from Laura Bush Middle School attended. What a fun and festive way to close out a semester of programs before summer! Thank you to all the students for doing such a great job on their Cinco banners and wooden maracas, and for everyone being given the chance to join in on a Mexican hat dance.

Our K12 team will be closing out the semester this week away from ICC, having our Music Around the World and Cinco on the Road programs at Roberts Elementary, Irons Middle School, and McWhorter's Elementary. Until we get to see all your smiling faces next Fall/Winter semester, please be safe and enjoy your upcoming last week of school and summer break!

Second graders from Miller Elementary School visited the ICC last Wednesday for our Cinco program. Students did an amazing job rotating through three stations, participating in activities with Mrs. Moreno, Mrs. Russwurm, and Mrs. Gay. At each station, students enjoyed a fun activity, and they were able to take home their creations to share with family about their time at the ICC. Students made fabric banners and decorated wooden maracas with their own style, and lastly, they each had the opportunity to join in a Cinco activity.

The Festival of Nations at Ramirez Elementary was so much fun for our K12 teacher, Mrs. Moreno. During their cultural rotation, students were able to learn about African culture and our African program. Students were given the opportunity to see an assortment of items ranging from handmade wooden African masks and African shakers used as percussion instruments, as well as detailed hand-beaded jewelry, bracelets, and necklaces, and more.

We would like to express our thank you to Arts Alliance and Artrageous from our entire TTU K12 GEO team for giving us the honor of sponsoring this year's School Day. It was a huge success, and to witness the cheerful excitement on all the second-grade attendees as they got to experience an amazing show put on by Artrageous!

What a wonderful show they put on, from the interaction with the audience, to the painting of Harry Potter, to the painting of the eagle! What a treat for all who attended this year's Arts Festival from April 18-19 at the Civic Center. Thank you to all who stopped by to see our K12 team booth to put their own creative touch on our flower selection or our popular Raider Red! We look forward to next year's Arts Festival.

On Thursday, April 9th, the kindergarten class from Maedgen visited the ICC. Our K-12 teachers presented the Maasai Culture in Kenya program. Students attending were able to hear and learn about the Maasai culture and animals from Kenya. Students took part in their own Maasai jumping dance, known as Adumu. It's a friendly competition to see who can jump the highest during the competition. Students even had the opportunity to draw animals found in Kenya on a banner and make bracelets to take home as a souvenir.

Students on April 8th making up the eighth-grade class at Kingdom Prep took part in becoming immigrants from Poland, Sweden, and Romania, making a long journey to Ellis Island in pursuit of a better life for their families. Students were separated into groups to work together during tasks, where they discussed and learned about the push and pull factors that affected life for many people when deciding to give up everything they had to pursue a better opportunity in the U.S.

Students went through a role-play of checking into ports, where most traveled in crowded steerage decks heading to the U.S. Students were able to get a glimpse of how families had to undergo medical checks for all those making the trip before being allowed to enter or stay in the U.S. As students finished watching the final video, they were handed an American flag as a souvenir.

Our friends from Laura Bush Middle School stopped by Tuesday morning to take part in our India Holi program. Students braved the cool morning forecast with smiles on their faces, going outside to take part in throwing the Holi powder. The throwing of Holi powder in the air can have different meanings, including new beginnings, good over evil, and the arrival of spring with vibrant colors. Before heading outside, students enjoyed making canvas banners and showing their creative side with colors for elephants used in their own Elephant ceremony.

On March 31st, we enjoyed having the first-grade bilingual students from Lubbock Cooper North stop by for our Cinco program. Students did a great job interacting with our K-12 teachers, Mrs. Moreno, and Mrs. Gay, along with OIA staff volunteers who stopped by to interact with students in Spanish. Students made their own personalized banners and maracas and ended their trip with a Cinco de Mayo Mexican hat dance.
