is a 93-acre arboretum founded in 1961 and incorporated in 1964 in the historical K.N. The Arboretum offers the unique opportunity to experience mother nature with its diversity of tree, flower, bird, and butterfly species. The Arboretum is also a great place to learn about West Texas gardening through its wide variety of activities, events, and programs.

Conditions for Lubbock worsened from Moderate Drought (D1) to Severe Drought (D2), according to this week's U.S. Drought Monitor.

Lubbock has been in drought since December 30, 2025.

Watering of trees is being increased at the Arboretum to water more deeply and help reduce drought stress.

Leaf scorch and branch dieback are common symptoms of drought stress.

Newly planted trees are more at risk from drought than established trees. This Spartan Juniper was planted May 2 and started showing signs of drought stress in mid July. Watering by drip has been increased to longer sessions.

Pampas Grass are native to South America. They grow well in Lubbock but need space up to 10 feet wide and high. Supplemental watering can be required during drought. Fertilizer is not needed.

This Burgundy Desert Willow was planted in May this year. The Burgundy is a low to moderate water use hybrid. It has pink to deep red flowers that bloom in the summer. The blooms are reported to attract hummingbirds.

We had 15 fantastic community members and gardeners show up today for Thursday thrillers with the Lubbock Master gardeners! these fine folks put in some really hard work, ensuring that the grounds stay beautiful and are ever improving. They didn’t hesitate to jump in and help with the wildflower garden, which is currently under renovation with hopes for something wonderful in the coming new year. We cannot do this without the help of the community we appreciate all of you for showing up and loving this place as much as we do! If you are ever interested in volunteering at the Arboretum, please feel free to reach out or just show up every Thursday 8 AM like always we have coffee, snacks and conversation in the red brick house after!

Texas Purple Sage (Leucophyllum frutescens) in bloom at the Arboretum. This evergreen shrub withstands the intense heat and sun of Texas summers. It has many names including Texas barometer bush. According to folklore, the plant goes into bloom in anticipation of upcoming rain. It appears that the plant sometimes blooms because of humidity or low atmospheric pressure, which can occur before or after rain.

Morning glories blooming at the Arboretum. Their flowers open in the morning and close by mid-day.

Morning glories can be identified by their heart shaped leaves and funnel flowers.

The jujube trees at the Arboretum have a good crop of fruit this year. The fruit is showing signs of ripening and should be ripe in the next few weeks.

The fruit flavor and texture resemble apple. A mature jujube tree can have 40 to 100 lb or more of fruit.

They are drought-tolerant, have few disease and insect pest problems, and need relatively little care to yield plenty of fruit. Root sprouting can be a problem under mature trees. As soon as sprouts form, they should be cut off at or under the ground.

The trees are well adapted to Lubbock’s arid climate.
