Conditions for Lubbock worsened from Moderate Drought (D1) to Severe Drought (D2), according to this week's U.S. Drought Monitor.
Lubbock has been in drought since December 30, 2025.
Watering of trees is being increased at the Arboretum to water more deeply and help reduce drought stress.
Leaf scorch and branch dieback are common symptoms of drought stress.
Newly planted trees are more at risk from drought than established trees. This Spartan Juniper was planted May 2 and started showing signs of drought stress in mid July. Watering by drip has been increased to longer sessions.
