The Hour of Finality

Frank Guild Jr eloquently expressed the atmosphere at Ramsbury on the night of June 5th 1944. Guild described the scene in his 1978 book Action of the Tiger.

For now was the hour of finality, the hour that had been talked of at Pope Field, at Shanks, at Ascension, at Marrachech and on the Mauretania. For this was the hour that can come but once in the life of any man, for you may go into Le Muy, and you may go into the flaming hell of Zon and Eindhoven, and you may see the snow on the battle scarred fields of Bastogne and the ugly black flak exploding in the air and you may glimpse the Rhine at smoky Wesel, but only once can you prepare for D Day at Ramsbury and Membury. For now has come the long awaited night of the Big Fly. That there will be missions in the future that will make the D Day flight seem small in comparison, no one knows. Holland will see more planes and gliders and Wesel will see double tow used for the first time in battle, tonight at Ramsbury and Membury, if you are there, you witness and take part in the largest invasion ever staged by man up to this time”.

You Are About to Embark…

General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces, addressed Allied personnel the day before the Invasion of Normandy. As Glider Pilot Carl Gwartney took this picture, men were quickly painting stripes on gliders, tow aircraft, and the rest of the air armada that would set off for France in the coming hours.

In his address, Eisenhower proclaimed that:
“you are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.”
