Currently the unit includes a Deputy Chief, Lieutenant, Sergeant, Corporal, 8 officers and seventeen horses. The LPD Mounted Patrol attends functions such as neighborhood events, parades, festivals, ABC rodeo, and events for community organizations. Patrol functions include searching for lost persons or evidence, patrol in high crime areas, crowd control, and visibility in the Depot District. The unit focuses on strengthening relations between the police department and the community by enhancing visibility and promoting approachability. The unit is a part time unit since each member is assigned to other positions in the department. Each member owns their own horse and supplies feed, veterinary care, transportation, and boarding. The unit is dependent on private donations, through the Lubbock Police Foundation, to grow and improve service to the community.
