Lubbock Police Department Mounted Patrol

The Lubbock Police Department Mounted Patrol was founded in 2000.

Currently the unit includes a Deputy Chief, Lieutenant, Sergeant, Corporal, 8 officers and seventeen horses. The LPD Mounted Patrol attends functions such as neighborhood events, parades, festivals, ABC rodeo, and events for community organizations. Patrol functions include searching for lost persons or evidence, patrol in high crime areas, crowd control, and visibility in the Depot District. The

unit focuses on strengthening relations between the police department and the community by enhancing visibility and promoting approachability. The unit is a part time unit since each member is assigned to other positions in the department. Each member owns their own horse and supplies feed, veterinary care, transportation, and boarding. The unit is dependent on private donations, through the Lubbock Police Foundation, to grow and improve service to the community.

In honor of National Police Week, Officer Trotter escorts a riderless horse during our annual police memorial ceremony.

The riderless horse serves as a solemn symbol of a fallen officer. The reversed boots placed in the stirrups represent the officer’s final farewell — looking back upon comrades and loved ones one last time.

We remember the seven fallen officers of the Lubbock Police Department and will forever hold them in our hearts.

Chief is a 13-year-old Quarter Horse with a big personality and an even bigger love for alfalfa. 💚

Tanner and Possum had a great time at the Prosecutor’s Office and Municipal Court Trunk-or-Treat this past month! Possum may have even gotten a little lesson about traffic lights along the way.😀

Job, Chief, and Preacher had a great time at the Touch-a-Truck event at South Plains Mall. Hosted each year by the Junior League of Lubbock, this event gives kids of all ages the chance to touch, explore, and learn about all kinds of vehicles and equipment used by local businesses and first responders. All the trucks were cool, but let’s be honest—a horse is still the best ride around! 🐎
