House bill 5077 of 2023 made access to Naloxone easier in Michigan. The bill was sponsored by Curt Vanderwall and passed with overwhelming support. The bill allows for easier access to naloxone and protects individuals who administer it from liability. Since the bill's passage, Michigan overdose deaths have been reduced by half. In partnership with The HOPE Project, the Ludington Library now has a Naloxone (Narcan) distribution box available where individuals can access Naloxone any time they need it via the outdoor distribution box. Naloxone is a safe and effective way to reverse an opioid overdose. It will not harm anyone and will only work to reverse an opioid overdose if someone has opioids in their system. Many health care providers, social workers, and public officials carry naloxone on them, and anyone that has been prescribed an opioid painkiller should have some around. The naloxone boxes at the Library, COVE, the District Health Department, and Community Mental Health offer our community another way to care for each other.
