Please see the message below from the Black River Action Team:

Hello friends:

I'm looking for a large group of folks to come join forces with me this coming Saturday, to install 100 native silver maples on the floodplain at the Fletcher Farm Field on Route 103, at the Ludlow/Cavendish Town Line.

While the maples are currently only four feet tall, they can soar to 50-80' and are ideal floodplain and river bank species. Ideally, they will gain an average of 3-7' in height each year, although not all of the trees are expected to survive.

We will aim to install them as close to the bank as possible, to help provide shade for the river, competition for the Japanese knotweed that is being managed there, and a 'front line' against flood energy when next the Black River rises.

When: Saturday, May 30

Time: 9 am until we're done (come when you can, stay as long as you're able!)

Bring: sturdy shoes/boots to handle the uneven terrain; work gloves; sun & insect protection (including tick spray); a bottle for drinking water; a shovel if you have one; a sense of humor and adventure! Singing and telling jokes are encouraged!

Please reach out to Kelly Stettner at [email protected] if you plan to attend.

Great news, The Ludlow Recreation Department has stocked West Hill Recreation Area with both Brown and Rainbow Trout, just in time to enjoy some spring fishing!

Whether you are an experienced fisherman or just looking for a relaxing afternoon by the water, now is a perfect time to grab your fishing pole and head over to West Hill. The fish are in, the weather is beautiful, and the scenery couldn’t be better.

We encourage residents and families to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, and take advantage of this great local recreation opportunity. Don't forget your fishing license and maybe a camera, you might reel in your next big catch!

Note: must comply with current Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department fishing regulations and licensing requirements, including season dates, catch limits, and any applicable rules for trout fishing.

A big thank you to everyone who helped make this stocking possible. Happy fishing, Ludlow! 🎣

Yesterday the Town closed on the property formerly known as Sam's Steakhouse located at 91 Rte 103. This is/was a buyout offer the Select Board approved with payment through VT Emergency Management (via FEMA). All costs for purchase and future demolition are incurred by VEM.

What does this mean?
The Town of Ludlow owns the property. Future use is deed restricted and as such, will be very limited. We might be able to have gravel parking, signs, or interpretive panels, and trails/trailheads, but any proposal(s) need to be approved by the State.

Immediate Next Steps:
We cannot touch, nor do anything with the property - this includes the flood ravaged building. IF someone asks if they can remove and/or have pieces of the structure (roof, siding, etc) the answer is NO. We cannot incur the liability, nor can we risk losing our good standing with VEM. The public’s help in sharing this important message would be greatly appreciated.

Over the Next Several Weeks:
Within 3-4 weeks, VEM will issue a Notice to Proceed (for demolition). They will do an inventory, identify type of contractors needed and hire the appropriate contractor(s) for demolition. All debris will be removed. VEM manages the entire process.
