Technical Rope Rescue at Buttermilk Falls
Yesterday afternoon, Ludlow Fire Department responded to Buttermilk Falls for an injured hiker who had fallen in the lower falls.
Due to the steep terrain and the patientβs location, crews utilized high-angle rope rescue equipment to safely access, stabilize, and remove the individual from the hazard area. Chester, VT Fire Department assisted with technical rescue operations, and Springfield Fire Department (Ludlow Ambulance was committed on another emergency incident) transported the patient to the hospital after removal from the scene.
The rescue required coordination between multiple agencies and specialized rope rescue techniques, including packaging the patient in a Stokes litter and conducting a high angle raise back to the trail.
β οΈ Safety Reminder:
Buttermilk Falls is a beautiful destination, but slippery rocks, steep terrain, and cold, moving water can quickly create dangerous conditions. Please wear proper footwear, use caution near edges, and let someone know your plans when exploring alone.
We would like to thank Springfield Fire Department and Chester Fire Department for their assistance and professionalism.
This incident also highlights the continued progress being made through Okemo Valley Technical Rescue, where regional responders are expanding their specialized rescue capabilities. Last week, 15 personnel completed Swiftwater Technician training, and another 15 personnel will complete Rope Rescue Operations training in early May as we continue strengthening regional emergency response.
