Today, on 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆, we remember the lives lost to overdose, stand with the families who carry that loss, and recommit ourselves to helping those still battling addiction.

At the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office, we know how widespread this struggle is. More than 90% of the people entering our correctional facilities report some level of substance use disorder. That’s why we believe our responsibility goes beyond incarceration — it means accountability, treatment, recovery and giving people the tools to build a better life.

And that work extends far beyond our walls.

Together with the Office of Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni and dozens of community partners, we help lead the Hampden County Addiction Task Force (HCAT) and its Rapid Response & Connection Team. The team reaches out to people following an overdose — often within 24 to 72 hours — and meets people where they are, offering support without judgment, free Narcan, recovery resources and, when someone is ready, on-demand access to treatment.

Since 2020, the HCAT Rapid Response & Connection Team has helped connect more than 520 people to treatment, while conducting thousands of outreach attempts following overdoses and providing free Narcan, recovery support and access to treatment when someone is ready.

“Today we remember the people we’ve lost, but we fight like hell for the people who are still here,” Sheriff Nick Cocchi said. “Asking for help isn’t weakness — it takes strength. Whether we meet someone in our facilities, on the street after an overdose, or they simply reach out and say, ‘I need help,’ we’re going to be there. As long as someone is still breathing, there is still hope.”

Behind every overdose statistic is a person — someone’s child, parent, sibling, friend or neighbor.

Today, we remember. Tomorrow, we keep doing the work.

The Hampden County Sheriff’s Office was proud to welcome a group of Massachusetts legislators to the Western Massachusetts Regional Women’s Correctional Center in Chicopee today, offering an inside look at the important work being done to improve the lives of the women in our care and custody.

Thank you to Hampden District Senator Adam Gomez, 1st Hampshire District Representative Lindsay Sabadosa, 11th Middlesex District Representative Amy Sangiolo, 5th Hampden District Representative Pat Duffy, and Tevin Colon, Legislative Aide representing 8th Hampden District Representative Shirley Arriaga, for taking the time to visit and learn more about WCC.

The legislators saw our full continuum of care, including education, vocational training, cognitive-behavioral programming, recovery support and therapeutic interventions. Grounded in trauma-informed, gender-responsive and evidence-based correctional practices, WCC works to address the underlying challenges facing the women in our care – many of whom are also victims of crime — from mental health and substance use disorder to trauma and other root causes of incarceration.

Serving women from across Massachusetts since opening in 2007 as the state’s newest purpose-built regional correctional facility exclusively for women, WCC plays a critical role in helping inmates prepare for successful reentry as socially and civically responsible citizens. This commitment to excellence helped WCC earn a second straight perfect 100% score during its most recent American Correctional Association audit, reaffirming the quality of care, programming and professionalism found throughout the facility.

Thank you again to our legislative guests for spending time with our dedicated WCC team and seeing firsthand how their work makes a difference for the women in our care, the communities they return to, and the Commonwealth as a whole.

Congratulations, Keith! And a big thank you to the Hampden County Addiction Task Force team for saving lives in our community every single day.

On August 21, 2024, Chicopee Police Sgt. Alan Blankenship reached out to the Hampden County Addiction Task Force (HCAT) Rapid Response and Connection Team regarding a man in crisis.

When the team met Sgt. Blankenship at the house, they encountered Keith, who was going through severe alcohol withdrawal after drinking continuously for 10 days. Although Keith was reluctant to ask for help, he agreed to enter treatment after a thoughtful conversation with Sgt. Blankenship and the HCAT team.

Arrangements were made immediately, and the team safely transported him to a local treatment facility. Since that day, Keith has stayed in close touch with the team members he credits with helping save his life.

We are so proud of you, Keith! We stand behind you and will continue to support and encourage you on every step of your recovery journey! 💙👏

For 15 years, the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office’s Holyoke Safe Neighborhood Initiative has operated on a simple belief: one of the best ways to keep people out of jail is to reach them long before they ever get there.

On Saturday, thousands of families packed McNally Field for our 15th Annual HSNI Back to School Event, where we distributed 2,500 backpacks filled with school supplies and brought together dozens of community organizations for an afternoon focused on kids, families and opportunity.

And this year, we were honored to welcome Governor Maura Healey, who saw firsthand what this initiative, created and managed by the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office, has grown into.

Her reaction said a lot about why this work matters:

Those words are especially meaningful to us.

In partnership with the City of Holyoke and other partners, HSNI happens outside the walls of our correctional facilities, and some may view community programming like this as “discretionary.” But after 15 years, we have seen the difference this work can make.

The Back to School Event alone has provided backpacks and school supplies to more than 35,000 students since it began. HSNI's year-round work has connected countless young people and families with mentoring, activities, services, resources and positive relationships. And during the same period, as the governor mentioned, Holyoke's graduation rate has climbed dramatically.

“Our responsibility to public safety doesn't begin at the jail door,” Sheriff Nick Cocchi said. “If we can reach a young person at 10, 12 or 15 years old, give them a mentor, put them around positive role models and show them opportunities they might not otherwise have, that's prevention. If that young person graduates, builds a career and never enters the criminal justice system, that's success. We can either invest in young people on the front end or pay a much greater price when they enter the criminal justice system on the back end. I know which investment makes more sense.”

Saturday was also a reminder that HSNI has never been the work of one agency alone. It succeeds because people throughout Holyoke have bought into the mission.

Thank you to Governor Healey for joining us and recognizing the value of this work; to our tremendous partners at the City of Holyoke and Holyoke Police Department; and to the businesses, nonprofits, service providers, sponsors, volunteers, HCSO staff and community members who have helped build HSNI over the past 15 years.

Most importantly, thank you to the young people and families of Holyoke who continue to show up, participate and give this initiative its purpose.

Fifteen years. More than 35,000 students supplied for school. Countless relationships built. And a generation of young people given more opportunities to succeed.

That's not something we consider discretionary.

That's prevention. Prevention is public safety. Investing in young people is investing in safer communities.

What a day in Holyoke!

The Hampden County Sheriff’s Office and our Holyoke Safe Neighborhood Initiative (HSNI) just wrapped up our 15th Annual Back to School Event, and once again, the Holyoke community showed up in a big way.

Thousands of families joined us at McNally Field as we distributed 2,500 backpacks filled with school supplies, gave away 50 bicycles, and filled the field with activities, food, free haircuts, community resources and, most importantly, positive connections with young people.

We were honored to welcome Governor Maura Healey and we thank her for spending time with our families, young people and community partners and for showing her support for the work the Sheriff’s Office and HSNI is doing in Holyoke.

For 15 years, HSNI has been about much more than one Back to School event. Created and managed by the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office, the initiative brings together law enforcement, government, businesses, nonprofits and neighborhood residents to reach young people before they ever enter the criminal justice system — and to give them opportunities to succeed.

“If we want to reduce incarceration, we have to be willing to invest in prevention,” Sheriff Nick Cocchi said. “That means getting out into our neighborhoods, building relationships with kids and giving them positive opportunities they may not otherwise have. Every young person we can help find the right path today is one less young person we may have to see come through our doors tomorrow. That’s what HSNI is all about.”

Over the past 15 years, the Back to School Event alone has put school supplies into the hands of more than 35,000 students. But the impact of HSNI goes much further. Through year-round mentoring, outreach, programming and partnerships, this initiative has touched countless lives and been part of a broader community effort that has helped improve Holyoke’s graduation rate and create brighter futures for young people across the city.

None of this happens alone.

What began as a vision in 2019 has grown into one of the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office’s most meaningful youth initiatives.

Last week, campers from Sheriff Nick Cocchi’s Youth Leadership Academy Summer Camp wrapped up another unforgettable summer with a day of fun, laughter, and adventure at Sonny’s Place in Somers, Connecticut. From mini golf and rides to spending time with friends, it was the perfect way to celebrate a summer filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable memories.

But the Youth Leadership Academy has always been about much more than summer fun.

Each week, more than 200 young people – many with incarcerated parents or from economically challenged neighborhoods – find a safe, supportive environment where they build confidence, develop leadership skills, create lasting friendships, and connect with positive role models who believe in their future.

“When we first talked about creating this camp in 2019, we hoped it would make a difference in the lives of local children. Today, thanks to an incredible team of dedicated staff members and volunteers, that vision has grown into a program that has provided a meaningful summer experience for well over 1,000 young people,” Sheriff Nick Cocchi said. “I couldn’t be more proud of everyone who has helped build this program into what it is today. Every smile, every new friendship, every lesson learned, and every child’s growing confidence reminds us why this work matters. We’re not just creating great summers – we’re helping shape brighter futures.”

Thank you to the outstanding team at Sonny’s Place for helping us close out another incredible summer, and thank you to every staff member, volunteer, community partner, and family who continues to make the Youth Leadership Academy a life-changing experience for so many young people.

Together, we’re proving that the right opportunities, encouragement, and positive role models can change lives.

When our community needs help, the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office answers the call.

Saturday evening’s powerful storm was confirmed by the National Weather Service as a macroburst, producing straight-line winds estimated at 60 to 70 mph as it moved from West Springfield into Springfield. The storm uprooted dozens of trees, damaged homes and vehicles, blocked roadways, knocked out power to thousands, displaced approximately 45 residents and prompted the City of Springfield to declare a state of emergency.

Sheriff Nick Cocchi dispatched members of our 𝐀𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 to assist with the removal of large fallen trees and other heavy debris. Our 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐰 is also on the ground in Forest Park, working alongside city crews to clean up the widespread damage and help make this treasured public space safe and welcoming again.

The storm also hit our own Western Massachusetts Recovery & Wellness Center on Mill Street, where falling trees and debris destroyed a passenger van and caused significant damage to a staff member’s vehicle. Thankfully, no one at the facility was injured.

“When our neighbors are hurting and our community calls for help, we show up,” Sheriff Cocchi said. “Our Arbor Apprenticeship Program has the training, equipment and experience to tackle some of the most difficult tree-removal work, while our Community Restitution Crew is doing its part to restore Forest Park for the families and visitors who enjoy it. I’m proud of everyone who stepped forward. This is what public service looks like—and we will continue helping Springfield for as long as we are needed.”

Participants in Sheriff Nick Cocchi's Youth Leadership Academy Summer Camp this year took part in the Junior Achievement Company Program Pop-Up, where they worked together to develop a business idea, create marketing strategies, and present their concepts through engaging poster presentations.

Designed to introduce students to entrepreneurship, the Junior Achievement Company Program Pop-Up teaches participants how to plan, launch, and operate a business. The camp’s Counselors in Training (CITs) collaborated on ideas while building valuable skills in communication, problem-solving, and leadership.

"One of the greatest investments we can make is in our young people. Our partnership with Junior Achievement of Western MA gives our Counselors in Training the opportunity to think creatively, while developing leadership and entrepreneurial skills that will serve them throughout their lives," Sheriff Cocchi said. "I am incredibly proud of this program and grateful to Junior Achievement, an organization with roots dating back to 1919 and founded right here in Springfield, MA, for helping inspire the next generation of leaders in our community."

The Youth Leadership Academy serves more than 200 children each week, providing a safe, supportive environment where young people, particularly those with incarcerated parents and from economically challenged neighborhoods, can build confidence, develop leadership skills, and create lasting relationships.

We are so proud of our CITs for the hard work, innovation, and professionalism they demonstrated throughout this project. The future is bright, and these young leaders are already proving they have what it takes to make a positive impact in their communities.

When students return to Westfield Middle School this fall, they'll be greeted by brighter hallways and a renewed sense of pride – all thanks to a partnership that's making a difference for both the school and the community.

This summer, the Hampden County Sheriff's Office Community Restitution Crew is painting the school's first-floor interior hallways at no cost for labor, saving Westfield Public Schools thousands of dollars. With the district providing the paint and materials, the project is the first phase of a two-year partnership, with plans already underway to complete the second floor next summer.

"This is exactly what community restitution is all about," said Sheriff Nick Cocchi. "The people in our care and custody have the opportunity to give back through meaningful work that benefits the communities they will one day return to. At the same time, we're helping taxpayers by saving the Westfield Public Schools thousands of dollars. It's a partnership where everyone benefits, and we're proud to lend a hand in creating a brighter, more welcoming environment for students, teachers and staff."

Westfield Middle School Principal Jesse McMillan said, "The fresh new look has completely transformed the feel of our building and will create a brighter, more welcoming environment for everyone who walks through our doors."
