The Hampden County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to rehabilitation, public safety, and community service—providing justice-involved individuals with education, treatment, and support while building stronger, safer communities across Western Massachusetts. The Hampden County Correctional Center is considered a model of safe, secure, orderly, lawful, humane, and productive corrections, where inmates

are challenged to pick up the tools and directions to build a law-abiding life in an atmosphere free from violence. The Hampden County, Massachusetts Sheriff's Department operates the Hampden County Correctional Center, which supervises offenders in various levels of security. In Massachusetts, county correctional facilities incarcerate both pre-trial detainees and sentenced individuals with sentences of two and a half years or less.

The Hampden County Sheriff’s Office is proud to support the Mental Health Association’s inaugural 𝗕𝗮𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲, a one-of-a-kind event dedicated to promoting mental health, resilience, and wellness across our communities.

Taking place at Springfield College on October 11-12, this unique event will bring together first responders, law enforcement officers, correctional professionals, active military members, veterans, and community supporters for a high-energy, team-based competition designed to test strength, teamwork, strategy, and mental toughness.

Organized by the Mental Health Association with the support of the HCSO, the Badge of Strength Endurance Challenge aims to raise critical funds for mental health and wellness programs while highlighting the importance of caring for those who dedicate their lives to serving others.

Each team of five will be led by a first responder, correctional professional, active military member, or veteran, with opportunities for family members, friends, coworkers, and community supporters to join the effort. Organizers hope to see representation from every city and town throughout Hampden County.

The Hampden County Sheriff’s Office is proud to congratulate Director of Government Affairs Chris Judd on being recognized with the Commonwealth Pride Award: LGBTQ+ Excellence on the Hill!

Presented at the State House in Boston and hosted by the LGBTQ+ Legislative Caucus, the award recognizes exceptional LGBTQ+ individuals who have made a meaningful impact through their service, leadership, and commitment to their communities. Held in the Senate Chambers, this was the first year the awards ceremony was held during LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

Throughout her career, Chris has been a passionate advocate for rehabilitation, reentry, and community-based support services. Her dedication to building partnerships and creating opportunities for individuals seeking a second chance has helped strengthen communities across Western Massachusetts and changed countless lives for the better.

"Chris’s commitment to helping others has been part of her mission throughout her entire career," Sheriff Nick Cocchi said. "She leads with compassion, integrity, and a genuine desire to make a difference in people's lives. We are incredibly proud of this well-deserved recognition and grateful for all she continues to do for the Sheriff's Office and the communities we serve."

Chris was nominated for the award by Representative Angelo Puppolo Jr. in recognition of her longstanding commitment to public service and her work supporting some of the region's most vulnerable residents.

Prior to her current role, she spent more than a decade leading Western Massachusetts operations for Roca, Inc., overseeing programs focused on high-risk young adults and young mothers involved in the criminal justice system.

Earlier in her career, she also served as an educator, athletic director, and dean of students at Cathedral High School in Springfield.

Today, the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office joins communities across the nation in recognizing Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates the enduring promise of freedom.

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas – more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. The day stands as both a celebration of freedom and a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of equality and opportunity for all.

"Juneteenth gives us an opportunity to reflect on our nation's history, honor the resilience and courage of those who fought for freedom, and recommit ourselves to the values of fairness, dignity, and respect," said Sheriff Nick Cocchi. "By learning from the past and working together in our communities, we can help build a future that offers hope and opportunity for everyone."

As we observe this important day, let us remember the lessons of history, celebrate the progress that has been made, and continue striving toward a more just society.

Sheriff Nick Cocchi and Hampden County Sheriff's Office staff gathered for breakfast on Wednesday to proudly recognize and celebrate the remarkable careers of several dedicated employees who are retiring.

The Hampden County Sheriff's Office was honored to host a special community ceremony Tuesday at Riverfront Park as part of Flag Sojourn 250, a nationwide patriotic journey celebrating America's approaching 250th anniversary.

The event welcomed a historic American flag that is traveling to every U.S. state, every U.S. territory, and every U.S. military cemetery overseas before concluding its journey in Washington, D.C., during the nation's Semiquincentennial celebration in 2026.

Honor Guards from HCSO, Middlesex Sheriff's Office and Suffolk County Sheriff's Department displayed and transferred the flag using proper U.S. Flag Code etiquette.

Hosted with assistance from the City of Springfield Parks Department and brought to Massachusetts by the Massachusetts Sheriffs' Association, the ceremony featured the National Anthem performed by Dawn Bourbeau, remarks from Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, and a keynote address from Kelly Fellner, Superintendent of the Springfield Armory National Historic Site. Community leaders and residents from throughout Western Massachusetts gathered to celebrate the ideals of unity, service, remembrance, and civic pride represented by the American flag.

“In a time when our politics can feel increasingly divided, it’s important to remember that we have far more in common than what separates us,” Sheriff Nick Cocchi said. "The challenges we face as a nation will not be solved by division, but by recognizing our shared humanity and working together toward common goals.

"That is what the American flag represents: not uniformity of thought, but unity of purpose. It reminds us that we are all part of something larger than ourselves, and that the strength of our nation has always come from our ability to move forward together,” the sheriff said.

Flag Sojourn 250 is a project of the National Flag Foundation and America250's America Waves initiative and is supported by partners including the National Sheriffs' Association, UPS, and the American Battle Monuments Commission.

While today we celebrate Flag Day, we’re also looking ahead to Tuesday, when The Flag Sojourn 250 comes to Massachusetts. The Hampden County Sheriff's Office will proudly host a special community ceremony at 11:30 a.m. at Riverfront Park in Springfield as part of a nationwide patriotic journey celebrating America's approaching 250th anniversary.

Sheriff Nick Cocchi and the entire Hampden County Sheriff's Office are sending our deepest condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the two young Springfield residents who died in separate incidents this week.

On Wednesday, the Springfield community was shaken by two separate tragedies involving young residents. In one incident, an 8th-grade boy from Springfield tragically lost his life following a drowning incident during a school field trip to a day camp in Granby, Connecticut.

In the other incident, a young girl from Springfield died following an incident near railroad tracks in the city. Both incidents remain under investigation by the appropriate authorities.

While the circumstances surrounding both unrelated tragedies remain under investigation, the loss of two young lives has left an entire community grieving.

In response, Sheriff Nick Cocchi 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙖𝙢𝙥𝙙𝙚𝙣 𝘾𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙮 𝙎𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙛𝙛’𝙨 𝙊𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙀𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙎𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝘿𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 to the city school where the young boy attended to assist students, teachers, and staff as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. The Emotional Support Division is specially trained to provide crisis support and help individuals process grief following traumatic events.

“Our hearts are broken for these families,” said Sheriff Nick Cocchi. “While the circumstances surrounding these unrelated tragedies are still being investigated, the reality is that two families are mourning the loss of lives taken far too soon. As a community, we must come together to support one another, keep these families in our thoughts and prayers, and make sure the young people affected by these losses know they are not alone.”

💙 The Hampden County Sheriff’s Office is saddened by the passing of our dear friend, Sylvia Sullivan.

For years, Sylvia was a familiar and beloved presence in Forest Park, where she could often be found walking her cherished dogs, sharing stories, and brightening the day of everyone she met. Through those daily visits, she developed lasting friendships with countless members of the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office, especially the deputies assigned to the park and surrounding neighborhoods. Our deputies always looked forward to seeing Sylvia, stopping to chat with her, hear about her latest adventures, and spend time with someone whose kindness and compassion were impossible to miss.

A lifelong educator, animal lover, and advocate for others, Sylvia touched countless lives throughout Western Massachusetts. Her obituary notes that her love of Forest Park and the friendships she formed with members of our agency even inspired her to write a children's book, Prince of the Park.

“Sylvia was one of those special people who made everyone around her feel like a friend,” said Sheriff Nick Cocchi. “Our deputies genuinely enjoyed spending time with her, and her love for animals, children, and our community was evident in every conversation. Forest Park won't be quite the same without her, but her memory and the joy she brought to so many people will live on. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.”

Rest in peace, Sylvia. Thank you for your friendship, your kindness, and the countless smiles you brought to our deputies and our community. ❤️
