That’s a wrap on the Long County Junior Deputy Academy!

We officially survived the week! On June 5th, we concluded another amazing Junior Deputy Academy. If you thought keeping up with a building full of energetic 4th through 7th graders was easy, you clearly haven't tried teaching them about pursuit driving maneuvers before they're even old enough for a learner's permit.

Huge congratulations to all the cadets who chose to spend a week of their summer break with us instead of sleeping in until noon.

A quick recap of what our new recruits conquered this week:

Tactical Learning: They got hands-on with Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) and fi****ms safety. We just hope they don't try using their new investigative skills to dust for fingerprints in the kitchen at home. 🕵️‍♂️

Expert Mentorship: They spent the week hanging out with real law enforcement professionals, getting a front-row seat to our daily duties and specialized training. 👮‍♀️🤝

Personal Growth: Most importantly, they proved they have what it takes when it comes to discipline, teamwork, and community service. 💪

The Food: They successfully ate their weight in the free breakfasts and lunches provided by the Long County School’s Nutrition Office! 🍩🥪

A massive thank you to all the students who submitted their essays and spent June 1st through the 5th working hard with our team. Your new uniform shirts and hats might be a little dirty now, but the future of our community is looking incredibly bright.

Take a well-deserved summer vacation, Cadets—we can’t wait till next year! 💙

A big thanks to Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Trinity Baptist Church, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, The Long County School Board and its staff, Long County Fire Department, The Long County Sportsmans Club, and our School Resource Officers and staff. Without your help and dedication to the youth of Long County, none of this would have been possible. All supplies provided at no cost to tax payers of Long County.

Good afternoon my fellow Long County Citizens,

On April 16th, 2026, the Long County Commissioner’s held a meeting and some inaccuracies were reported. First and foremost, I want it to be known that I never asked or suggested any Long County Employees be furloughed or terminated. I would never wish anyone to lose their job at my expense.

It has been portrayed that my office has not taken any cuts or made any sacrifices since the beginning of Long County’s financial crisis. It has also been portrayed that I have asked the Long County Board of Commissioners for ADDITIONAL money which was not previously approved in the Sheriff’s Office budget. Neither is true. My staff has been reduced by over 20% in a 2-year period. Most of my Deputies are filling numerous roles within the Sheriff’s Office whether it be patrolling our county roads or investigating felony cases with our Criminal Investigation Division. These needs change daily.

It has also been portrayed that the Sheriff’s Office has submitted a “Wish List” to the Board of Commissioners. There is no Wish List of any items. I simply provided a list of items that the Sheriff’s Office needs to purchase soon. This list was provided to the Long County Attorney. This included numerous miscellaneous items to include ammunition, body worn cameras, ballistic vest and patrol vehicle equipment to equip patrol vehicles. All of these items were previously approved in the Long County Sheriff’s Office current operating budget. Comments were made questioning why these items weren’t requested in the past. The fact is that these items have long been needed by the Sheriff’s Office. However, due to requests made by the Long County Manager, the Sheriff’s Office has been very frugal with spending and simply getting by. Comments were made that I requested Long County to take out another TANS note for $300,000 dollars to pay for these items. I did not request the Long County Board of Commissioners to borrow any more money.

A large topic of this meeting was Jail Operations and the proper housing and care of inmates arrested by the Long County Sheriff’s Office. At this current time, we owe Appling County for 4 months of inmate housing. We owe Tattnall County for 7 months of inmate housing. We owe McIntosh County for 6 months of inmate housing. We owe Wayne County for 4 months of inmate housing. We owe Screven County for 1 month of inmate housing. This totals over $135,000 dollars. This debt does not include inmate health care or medicine. I have personally paid for inmate medicine out of my own pocket. It was stated that the current jails that we use to house our inmates are more than happy to continue to house our inmates. Though this is true on most cases, the Long County Sheriff’s Office regularly must move inmates out of these jails to other jails due to behavior, medical, or mental illness along with capacity constraints in these jails. I would like to personally thank my fellow Sheriff’s of these counties for housing inmates for our county. Without the cooperation of these Sheriff’s, we simply could not do our job.

Based off the Long County Commissioner’s Actual Spending Report for Fiscal Year 2024-2025, the Long County Sheriff’s Office spent less than 50% of the approved budget. This means we did not spend half of the money we were approved to operate on to aid in the financial crisis. The Long County Board of Commissioners approved a current operating budget for the Long County Sheriff’s Office that is approximately 12% less than the approved budget for Fiscal Year 2024-2025. We are currently projected to spend significantly less than this Fiscal Year’s approved budget as well.

My office will continue to do the best that we possibly can to assist in returning this county to financial stability. I would like to thank all of the Long County Citizens for your support at our Sheriff’s Office during these uncertain times.

Thank you

Sheriff Craig W. Nobles
