đź’§ The 2026 MassDEP Sanitary Survey identified several violations, deficiencies, and recommendations that the Lunenburg Water District is actively addressing to ensure continued delivery of safe, reliable drinking water.

Required corrective actions include improvements to source protection, alarm testing procedures, backflow prevention program administration, infrastructure maintenance, and water quality management. The District will submit corrective action plans to MassDEP by September 30, 2026, for storage tank improvements and for reducing manganese levels in water supplied from the Lancaster Avenue well system.

The survey also noted elevated manganese concentrations in portions of the system, with levels exceeding both MassDEP's secondary drinking water standard and health-based guidance values. The District is required to provide public notification and develop a long-term plan to reduce manganese levels consistently below recommended thresholds. In addition, the report noted detections of PFOA above the U.S. EPA's recently established maximum contaminant level at certain sources and treatment locations. MassDEP has recommended that the District update its capital improvement planning to address PFAS treatment and achieve compliance with upcoming federal regulations.

Lunenburg Water District is committed to addressing these findings, investing in system improvements, and maintaining transparency with our customers as we continue to protect public health and strengthen our water infrastructure for the future.
