As you may have heard, Unitil is making updates/improvements to Lunenburg's electric grid substations. They are hosting in-person and virtual public info sessions so residents can learn about the plan. Consider attending to ask your questions/provide feedback as we continue to increasingly rely on the electric grid.

In-person meeting:
Wednesday, September 4th, 6:30 PM at the Lunenburg Public Library, 1023 Mass Ave.

Virtual meeting:
Thursday, September 5th, 12:00 PM

In no way are these giant metal jungle gyms. Substations are serious and important hubs of electric infrastructure where electricity is "stepped down" in voltage from the incoming transmission or sub-transmission lines to the poles and wires you see in local neighborhoods.

Rain barrels are an environmentally-friendly and cost-effective way to water your flower and vegetable gardens! Do you know how big of a barrel you'd need if we were in a dought?

For vegetables in the summer, it's recommended to apply ~1 inch of water over the surface area of the garden bed per week. That is equivalent to 0.623 gallons per sq ft.

For example, a 32 sq ft bed requires 20 gallons of water per week.
(32 sq ft x 0.623 gallons per sq ft = 20 gallons per week).

A large garden could need as much as 200 gallons of water per week, so be prepared with a large rain barrel for those hot, dry summer days.

For more math, visit:https://ucanr.edu/sites/scmg/files/185639.pdf

🌧️ Benefits of Collecting Rainwater:
• Reduces local flooding.
• Eases stress on stormwater systems.
• Keeps pollutants out of rivers and streams.
• Provides clean water for lawns, gardens, washing cars, and more.

💧 Did You Know? A quarter-inch of rain on an average home yields over 200 gallons of water! Using rain barrels is a simple and low-cost way to reduce stormwater runoff from your property.

🛢️ What is a Rain Barrel? Rain barrels are large containers that capture stormwater from your roof. Modern rain barrels are sealed, child-safe, insect-resistant, and can even be decorated. Divert water from your downspout to fill your rain barrel, and access the water easily later.

🌸 Why Use Rain Barrels?
• Around 40% of household water used in summer is for lawns and gardens.
• Rainwater is free of chlorine, lime, and calcium, making it perfect for plants.
• Save on your water bill while helping the environment.

This committee helps with energy saving opportunities big and small. The Lunenburg Police Department is cruising (green 🌱🌱) style in hybrid vehicles, saving money on gas and reducing emissions!

Shout out to our own Officer Jonathan Broc for showing us one of the hybrid cruisers you see around town 🤩

When municipal/town vehicles are due for replacement, the GCC applies for grants that offset the cost between a standard gas and a hybrid vehicle ($5k per vehicle).

Have you noticed the streetlights look different? 🤔

With approval during the November 2020 Special Town Meeting, Lunenburg purchased our streetlight infrastructure from Unitil and converted to LED in November 2023 after about 10 years of preparation. The new LED lights have been installed utilizing a MA Green Communities grant of $138,000 and an Energy Incentive rebate of $37,900 through Unitil. The new dimmable lights which will save the town about $50,000 each year and reduce energy consumption by ~107,583 kWh per year! 🙌
