🗳️ The June 2 Primary: How to Vote and Why It Matters
Polls are open 7 a.m.–8 p.m. Bring a photo ID with your name and current address.
A few things to know:
• Montana has open primaries. You'll get three ballots — Democratic, Libertarian, Republican — but you may vote only ONE. Mark more than one, and all of them are rejected. Vote a single ballot and discard the rest.
• Voting absentee? It's too late to mail it. A postmark isn't enough. Hand-deliver it to the Carbon County Elections Office or your polling place by 8 p.m. June 2. Sign it and write your birth year on the return envelope (look for the two red arrows). A missing signature or birth year is the #1 reason ballots get rejected.
• Need to register or update your registration? You can do it in person through Election Day at the courthouse in Red Lodge.
• Confirm your ballot was accepted with "Track Your Ballot" at sosmt.gov.
Why it matters: primaries often decide who represents us, and turnout is low, so every vote carries real weight. The next Legislature will make big calls on property taxes, school funding, and the budget. Whoever you support, please take part.
A quick report-back from last session: I backed the homestead property tax reforms (HB 231 / SB 542) that cut the burden on Montana homeowners and renters, sponsored HB 567 to help our rural schools share resources and get more dollars into the classroom, and supported lowering the top income tax rate from 5.9% to 5.4%.
