TROPICAL STORM WATCH

Crenshaw County has now been placed under a Tropical Storm Watch which means tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours.

Forecast winds: 25–35 mph with gusts to 45 mph. Forecast uncertainty means residents should prepare for possible stronger winds of 58–73 mph.

Rainfall: 3–6 inches, with locally higher amounts. Flooding, hazardous travel, and road closures are possible.

Secure loose outdoor items.
Charge phones and gather flashlights, batteries, and essential supplies.
Prepare for possible power outages.
Monitor official alerts and complete preparations before winds become hazardous.

Never drive through flooded roads.

Good morning, everyone.

Tropical Depression #9 strengthened overnight and is now Tropical Storm Isaias.

Isaias is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane as it moves toward the northern Gulf Coast later this week. There is still uncertainty regarding the exact track, intensity, and where the greatest impacts will occur, so we expect the forecast to continue to change as we get closer to the weekend.

What does the current forecast look like for our area?

According to the National Weather Service, today and Thursday should remain relatively quiet, with mostly sunny conditions expected.

Conditions are expected to begin changing Friday, as rain increases and winds become breezy. By Friday night, tropical storm conditions are possible, with periods of heavy rain.

Saturday currently appears to be the main period to watch. The National Weather Service is forecasting widespread rain, possible thunderstorms, and windy conditions, with gusts currently forecast as high as 45 mph in the Crenshaw County area.

Conditions should gradually improve as we move through Sunday, although some showers, thunderstorms, and breezy conditions may remain.

There is still plenty of time for this forecast to change. Please do not focus on one particular track or outcome. Instead, use the next couple of days to review your plans, check your supplies, and make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.

Crenshaw County EMA continues to monitor Tropical Storm Isaias closely and remains in communication with our state and National Weather Service partners.

Keep an umbrella handy and outdoor plans flexible! Rain chances increase Saturday night, with Sunday looking like the wettest day of the weekend.

Today: Mostly sunny with a high near 88°F. A 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1 p.m. Southeast winds around 5 mph. Rainfall of 0.10–0.25 inches is possible, with higher amounts in thunderstorms.

Tonight: Partly cloudy with a low around 69°F. A 20% chance of showers before 10 p.m. Winds will be calm.

Saturday: Partly sunny with a high near 86°F. A 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m. Calm winds become southeast around 5 mph in the morning. Rainfall of 0.10–0.25 inches is possible, with higher amounts in thunderstorms.

CRENSHAW COUNTY NEEDS RED CROSS VOLUNTEERS

When a family loses their home to a fire, severe weather impacts our community, or a shelter has to open, someone needs to be there to help.

Right now, Crenshaw County needs local American Red Cross volunteers who are willing to serve right here in our community.

You do not have to already know how to do the job. Come learn what volunteering with the Red Cross involves, what training is provided, and how you can help your neighbors when they need it most.

We will be hosting an American Red Cross Town Hall Meeting and Q&A:

We are especially looking for people interested in helping with disaster shelters and responding to local emergencies such as house fires and other disasters.

There is no commitment just for attending. Come ask questions, learn what is involved, and see if becoming a Red Cross volunteer is right for you.

You may never know whose family you will be helping, but it could be someone you know.

Please help us spread the word! Even if volunteering isn't something you can do right now, please share this post so we can reach others throughout Crenshaw County who may be willing to step up and serve.

The more people we reach, the better chance we have of building a strong group of local volunteers ready to help our neighbors when they need it most.

Is Your Vehicle Ready?

You do not need an expensive emergency kit or specialized equipment to be better prepared while traveling. A few common items can make a breakdown, road closure, or unexpected delay easier to manage.

Consider keeping the following in your vehicle:
* Jumper cables
* A flashlight with extra batteries
* A phone charger or portable power bank
* Bottled water and a few nonperishable snacks
* A small first-aid kit
* Work gloves
* A rain poncho
* Paper towels
* An old blanket

Keep everything together in a small tote or reusable bag, and check it occasionally for expired food, leaking batteries, or damaged supplies.

Start with what you already have and add other items when you can. A simple kit is better than having nothing when you need it.

Weekly Weather Outlook | September 28 – October 2

We’re closing out September with plenty of sunshine and some cooler nights before rain chances return later in the week.

Monday
Mostly sunny with a high near 84°. Mostly clear tonight with a low around 56°.

Tuesday
Sunny with a high near 88°. Clear Tuesday night with a low around 61°.

Wednesday
Sunny and warmer with a high near 90°. Mostly clear Wednesday night with a low around 67°.

Thursday
Mostly sunny with a high near 90°. A slight chance of an afternoon shower, around 20%. Partly cloudy Thursday night with a low around 69°.

Friday
Showers become more likely, especially during the afternoon, with a thunderstorm also possible. High near 87° with a 60% chance of rain. Rain chances decrease Friday night to around 40%, with a low near 70°.

Overall, we’re looking at a mostly quiet and warm week across Crenshaw County. The cooler nights early in the week will give us another little taste of fall before temperatures and rain increase toward the end of the week.

We are saddened to share that Linda May Krieger, who was reported missing from Andalusia, was located deceased this afternoon.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and all those affected by this loss. We also appreciate the first responders, law enforcement personnel, and community members who assisted with the search.
