Luxemburg Fire Press Release 20190411-01

On April 10th at 3:45pm, the Luxemburg Community Fire Department was dispatched to N7435 Rendevous Road in the Town of Red River for smoke in a house.

While in route, firefighters were notified from the dispatch center that the house was fully engulfed. The occupants all got out safely. The fire was quickly upgraded to a multiple alarm fire.

Upon arrival firefighters found a 2 story single family residence with heavy fire throughout the interior of the structure. There was also a barn close to the house directly downwind of hot blowing embers. Firefighters knocked down much of the fire in the house from a defensive position. Crews also watered and foamed the barn to prevent it from starting on fire. As firefighters worked on extinguishing the house fire, a separate crew was sent to investigate the interior of the barn. That crew found cattle in a smoke filled barn and firefighters were able to get the cattle out.

With fire suppression in the home becoming difficult, the decision was made to try to knock down the remaining fire with an interior attack crew. As firefighters worked their way through the home up to the second floor, conditions worsened with the likelihood of flashover, and the decision was made to pull firefighters out of the structure. Most of the remaining attack was made from a defensive position.

The home and contents are considered a total loss.

The Red Cross provided food for firefighters and assistance to the occupants.

Fire departments who provided assistance on scene, at fill sites, or backfilling stations were: B.U.G., Southern Door, Algoma, Kewaunee, Casco, New Franken, Denmark and Tisch Mills. Luxemburg Rescue stood by on scene.

Firefighters remained on the scene for over 5 hours.

There were no injuries.

Cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Luxemburg Community Fire Department was dispatched Friday evening to E2470 LeCaptain Road in the Town of Red River for a report of a barn on fire. With frequent radio updates from the dispatch center, the call was quickly upgraded to a multiple alarm fire. When firefighters arrived they encountered a large barn almost completely engulfed in flames. Firefighters working in below freezing temperatures and strong winds were able to contain the fire to the one structure. Adjacent structures were saved. Unfortunately not all animals were able to get out and about 30 young stock perished along with one cow. Calves in an structure close to the fire were moved out to a different structure for precautionary measures. Responding fire agencies who provided assistance were Casco, Brussels-Union-Gardner, New Franken, Kewaunee, Algoma, Southern Door, Denmark, Carlton, Tisch Mills, Bellevue, Two Creeks and Sturgeon Bay. There were 3 separate fill sites established to provide water. In total 8 pumpers were used to support fire operations. Tenders numbered 20 that shuttled water. Two backhoes were used to pull the metal roof and sides off the structure so firefighters could get to hot spots. The Kewaunee County Highway Department kept roads sanded and Sheriff Officers provided traffic control. Luxemburg Rescue stood by for rehab efforts and in case of injury. Firefighters were on scene for about 9 hours.

Firefighters practice ladder placement using the aerial truck. The goal is to place a cone tied to the tip of the ladder on top of a cone placed on the roof. Firefighters also practice donning SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) to ensure all gear is properly put on in an timely manner. Also in an effort to save costs, firefighters repair large diameter hose by cutting out the bad section and putting the fitting back on. After repair, the hose will be re-tested per NFPA standards.

A Luxemburg Firefighter breaches a wall in a smoke filled environment during a recent training exercise. This training provides firefighters a method to escape entrapment, or access to others who may be trapped. The video shows the firefighter in full gear wearing breathing apparatus (SCBA) putting a hole through the wall using an axe. After breaching the wall, the firefighter keeps their air mask on still connected to the air tank, but removes their air tank from their back and crawls through the hole. They successfully gained access to others or escaped entrapment. The department thanks those who have given us access to their structure which allows this training to be provided.

A pre-connected 2 1/2" blitz 500 gpm nozzle along with three 1 3/4" pre-connected lines assist with quick fire knockdowns. A deluge gun mounted on top is used for knocking down big fires. The truck has rollup cabinet doors with LED lighting, and pullout shelving, each rated to hold 1000 pounds. Engine 902 is a great asset to our community. Luxemburg Fire Press Release 121716-01

On December 17th, at approximately 1:00am, the Luxemburg Fire Department along with automatic mutual aid from the Casco Fire Department was dispatched to E3324 County S for a garage fire with flames showing. The property owner was home at the time of the call.

With radio reports that the garage was an attached garage, with fire spreading to the home, a second alarm was struck requesting additional resources from area departments.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a 2 story single family residential home with heavy fire in the garage, which had spread into all floors of the structure. Firefighters vented the roof and fought the fire with an interior attack for 35 minutes before being pulled back due to the amount of fire in the structure and attic, and the possibility of roof collapse. Firefighters then knocked the fire down using a defensive attack, until it was safe to reenter the structure putting out remaining hot spots.

A fill site was attempted to be setup at a nearby dry hydrant, but with pipe failure, tenders were forced to shuttle water from the Algoma City water supply, along with setting up a fill site at the creek in Casco. A 3rd alarm for tenders was requested to keep the water supply flowing.

The Red Cross was contacted to assist the property owner.

Firefighters remained on the scene for 4 hours.

The home and contacts are considered a total loss.

Departments providing assistance on scene or backfilling vacated stations were:

Casco, Brussels-Union-Gardner, Southern Door, Algoma, New Franken, Kewaunee, Denmark, and Carlton. The County Highway Department was called in to plow roads, and Luxemburg Rescue stood by on scene in case of injury.

There were no injuries.

Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
