We enjoyed a visit today from Luxemburg Girl Scout Troop 4298. We discussed fire safety, donned turnout gear with SCBA, and demoed some of our equipment. After some great questions from the group, EMS discussed safety and demoed their equipment with more outstanding questions. Thank you scouts for the visit and the firefighters and EMTs who assisted.

The LC Public School kindergarten classes visited the fire station today as part of Fire Safety Week. We had a very attentive group listening to our talks about fire safety. After great questions, we set up the ladder truck and sprayed some water for our future firefighters. This is one of the reasons many of us enjoy being firefighters.

On Saturday 9/11, our station hosted the Fire and Iron Station 141 motorcycle club. Their event called Ride to Remember is for the fallen firefighters, police, paramedics, and all others who perished on 9/11.

The money they raise goes to the children’s burn camp in East Troy Wisconsin.

Their ride started Saturday morning with a ceremony at the Suamico Fire Department, then going to the Two Rivers Fire Department before heading to Luxemburg. They finished at the Oneida Radisson in Green Bay. Over 150 bikes participated and over 200 people.

What a great group supporting a great cause!

We can’t thank Chief Vandertie, the B.U.G. Fire Department, and their board members enough for loaning an engine to our department for three days while we had our apparatus out of service waiting for parts. It shows the great working relationships local departments have in working together.

At 12:55 am on Wednesday morning, the Luxemburg Fire Department was dispatched for smoke in a house at E1171 State Highway 29 in the Town of Montpelier. While in route, dispatchers informed responding units that there were flames showing. The fire was quickly upgraded to a multiple alarm fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a 2-story home with fire breaking through the roof. First in firefighters quickly advanced to the 2nd story attacking the fire until being pulled out due to deteriorating conditions. The structure had numerous additions, making it difficult getting to all voids within the roofline of the home. After knocking down fire with an exterior attack, firefighters again performed interior operations. Using over fifteen 3 and 4 person firefighter attack teams over a period of a few hours, firefighters were able to gain control of the fire and get access to all voids.

Responding agencies assisting Luxemburg Fire were Casco, New Franken, Kewaunee, and Denmark. Luxemburg Rescue assisted on scene. B.U.G. Fire stood by at the Luxemburg Fire Station in case of a 2nd alarm. Kewaunee County Officers shutdown Highway 29 for the duration of the call.

There were no injuries. Cause of the fire is a probable lightning strike.

Firefighters recently received valuable training by smoking an old farmhouse performing numerous tasks. Training involved search & rescue, maydays, advancing a hose line, radio communications, RIT operations, ladder truck, and pump operations. Also discussed were different ventilation tactics. New officers were given the opportunity to practice being the incident commander. We want to thank Rick and Debbie Kudick for use of the farmhouse.

The department’s October Brat/Burger fry has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The decision was made keeping the safety of the community in mind. We encourage everyone to follow the CDC and State guidelines by wearing masks and washing hands often. The sooner we follow these recommendations, the quicker we can beat this. Thanks to everyone for your continued support and be safe.

Last night firefighters were trained on using our new lift air bags. Firefighters purchased 2 high pressure stackable lift bags with each bag capable of lifting over 70 tons. Medium pressure lift bags capable of lifting over 13 tons to 40” were also purchased. New regulators, controllers, safely couplers and hoses were also bought. This purchase totaling over $15,000 was made possible by donations made to the department. We thank everyone for their donation and support in making this possible.

One of the many emergencies firefighters respond to are propane fire incidents. Luxemburg Firefighters trained Monday night on managing those incidents. The program was put on by Fire LLC, with Lakes Gas supplying the propane. Gatorade was donated by KCRA AKA The 'Burg Speedway. We thank the County for allowing us to use the fairgrounds, our Training Officer Mike for setting it up, and all agencies that provided this valuable training.

Appleton Fire Department

The deadliest fire in United States history began on this day in 1871 in Peshtigo, WI. The Great Pesh*tigo Fire is often overshadowed by the Great Chicago Fire which began on the same date.

The Great Chicago Fire changed the way the fire service approached prevention activites. The Great Pesh*tgo Fire was by far the most tragic. It is estimated that between 1,200 and 2,400 people were killed during the fire and millions of dollars of property and timberland were destroyed. Over 1.5 million acres (2,400 square miles) of forest was destroyed. The death toll in Chicago was approximately 250.

The Peshtigo Fire Company had a single, horse drawn steam pumper for fighting fires in the sawmills, but there was virtually no other technology available for fighting structure fires, much less a forest fire of such great magnitude. The people were essentially trapped in the town, surrounded by by wooden buildings and sidewalks, sawdust-strewn streets and a burning forest.

The fire continued to burn until it reached the waters of Green Bay, the storm winds died down, and the rain came.

Luxemburg Fire Press Release 20190411-01

On April 10th at 3:45pm, the Luxemburg Community Fire Department was dispatched to N7435 Rendevous Road in the Town of Red River for smoke in a house.

While in route, firefighters were notified from the dispatch center that the house was fully engulfed. The occupants all got out safely. The fire was quickly upgraded to a multiple alarm fire.

Upon arrival firefighters found a 2 story single family residence with heavy fire throughout the interior of the structure. There was also a barn close to the house directly downwind of hot blowing embers. Firefighters knocked down much of the fire in the house from a defensive position. Crews also watered and foamed the barn to prevent it from starting on fire. As firefighters worked on extinguishing the house fire, a separate crew was sent to investigate the interior of the barn. That crew found cattle in a smoke filled barn and firefighters were able to get the cattle out.

With fire suppression in the home becoming difficult, the decision was made to try to knock down the remaining fire with an interior attack crew. As firefighters worked their way through the home up to the second floor, conditions worsened with the likelihood of flashover, and the decision was made to pull firefighters out of the structure. Most of the remaining attack was made from a defensive position.

The home and contents are considered a total loss.

The Red Cross provided food for firefighters and assistance to the occupants.

Fire departments who provided assistance on scene, at fill sites, or backfilling stations were: B.U.G., Southern Door, Algoma, Kewaunee, Casco, New Franken, Denmark and Tisch Mills. Luxemburg Rescue stood by on scene.

Firefighters remained on the scene for over 5 hours.

There were no injuries.

Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
