🎒 WELCOME BACK, STUDENTS & FAMILIES! | "KNOW BEFORE YOU ROLL" SAFETY CAMPAIGN 🚸
As the new school year begins tomorrow, the Luxemburg Police Department welcomes all students, parents, teachers, and staff back for a safe, productive, and successful year!
With the start of classes, neighborhood streets, school zones, and crosswalks will see a significant increase in pedestrian foot traffic, buses, bicycles, and motor vehicles. The Luxemburg Police Department is officially launching our "Know Before You Roll" safety campaign to ensure all students arrive at school and return home safely every single day. Luxemburg officers will be maintaining a high-visibility presence throughout the Village, monitoring school zones, and enforcing traffic safety regulations.
🛑 KNOW BEFORE YOU ROLL: RULES OF THE ROAD
Before heading out tomorrow morning, parents and students are asked to review the legal requirements and Village ordinances governing travel on our roadways and sidewalks:
⚡ ELECTRIC BICYCLES (E-BIKES) & ELECTRIC SCOOTERS (E-SCOOTERS):
Rules of the Road Apply: Under Wisconsin law and Village Code § 4.01, e-bikes and e-scooters are subject to the same traffic regulations as standard bicycles.
Ride With Traffic: Operators must ride on the extreme right-hand side of the paved roadway with the flow of traffic—never against traffic.
Obey All Controls: Riders must come to a complete stop at stop signs, obey traffic control signals, and yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in crosswalks.
Required Night Lighting: Any e-bike or e-scooter operated during hours of darkness or low visibility must be equipped with a front white light visible from 500 feet and a rear red reflector or red lamp visible from 500 feet.
Safety First: Helmets are strongly urged for all operators. E-scooters and e-bikes should never be operated on downtown commercial sidewalks.
🛹 PLAY VEHICLES, SKATEBOARDS, ROLLER SKATES & TOY RIDE-ONS:
❌ STRICTLY PROHIBITED ON STREETS: Under Village Ordinance § 4.12, no person may ride a skateboard, roller skates, roller skis, kick scooter, or play vehicle (including children's battery-powered 6V/12V ride-on cars and gas go-karts) on ANY Village street, public parking lot, or business district sidewalk.
Permitted Locations: Play vehicles and recreational toys are permitted on residential sidewalks (yielding to pedestrians) and private driveways/property.
Enforcement & Confiscation: Pursuant to Section 4.12, officers encountering play vehicles or motorized toy cars in traffic lanes will seize the equipment. Impounded items will only be released to a parent or legal guardian following a mandatory parent-police conference at the Police Department.
🚌 SCHOOL BUSES & DRIVER REMINDERS:
Stop for Bus Flashing Red Lights: Drivers traveling in both directions on undivided roads must come to a complete stop at least 20 feet away when a school bus displays flashing red lights and extends its stop arm.
15 MPH School Zones: Under Village Ordinance § 4.02, the speed limit is strictly 15 MPH in all marked school zones when children are present (and 25 MPH on North Main Street).
