Despite receiving 2.5 inches of rain less than a week ago, wildfires can still happen, and today was a reminder of just that. Forestry 87 and Tanker 84 were dispatched to Lyman for a permitted burn that got a little out of control. They were joined by Service 88 and Ambulance 86, who were already out of the station for training. The fire was quickly contained, and all crews have returned to service. Stay vigilant out there! 🔥

At 6:20 Saturday evening, the Biddeford Regional Communications Center dispatched Goodwin’s Mills Fire-Rescue, along with automatic mutual aid companies, to an automotive repair shop in Lyman for a reported building fire.

Tanker 84 responded with a crew of four firefighters and arrived on scene within six minutes of dispatch. Crews found a fire inside the building, with the owner attempting to extinguish the flames using a garden hose. The fire had extended from the original source and started to burn the structural components of the building itself.

The initially arriving crew, along with responders from Alfred Fire-Rescue and the S**o Deputy Chief, were able to quickly extinguish the fire within minutes, keeping damage to a minimum.

The likely cause of the fire was determined to be a battery that had been left charging for more than 24 hours.

This incident serves as an important reminder to never leave batteries charging unattended or for extended periods of time.

In all 11 members of the Goodwin's Mills fire Rescue responded including the 3 that were on duty. This was the 4th emergency incident of the day.

Today, flags across the country are flying at half-staff as we honor the firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2025. Their sacrifice and service will never be forgotten.

The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service begins at 10:00 this morning for those who wish to watch and pay their respects. https://weekend.firehero.org/

Here in Goodwin’s Mills, this day is especially meaningful. Our department and community have felt the loss of two dedicated members whose impact is still felt today.

Captain Deb Cole, a South Portland firefighter and active member of Goodwin’s Mills Fire Rescue passed away in 2009 after suffering a fatal stroke while on duty at just 40 years old.

Deputy Chief George Davis passed away in 2012 at his home in Lyman from a heart attack after returning from an incident in Hollis, where he served as Chief. George, had retired from Goodwin's Mills when he took the Chief's job with the Hollis Fire Rescue.

Today, we remember all who made the ultimate sacrifice—and we honor the legacy of those from our own community who gave so much in service to others.

This week is Wildfire Awareness Week in the State of Maine.

So far this season, our department has responded to a half dozen wildfires. Thanks to a robust 911 system, modern equipment, an adequately staffed station, a dedicated group of on-call (volunteer) firefighters, and strong partnerships with our mutual aid departments, the largest fire we’ve encountered has been limited to just 1.3 acres.

These outcomes are not by chance, they are the result of preparation, teamwork, and a shared commitment to protecting our community.

We hope with the recent rains, and hopefully warming temperatures, things will green up. until then we encourage everyone to remain vigilant, follow local burn regulations, and report any signs fire immediately.

**Woods/Wildland Fire**

At 2:45pm today, Goodwins Mills and Alfred FD were called to Town Line Trl in Lyman (off Middle Rd) for a reported woods fire. Alfred Deputy Chief Clarke arrived on scene first, reporting a 100x100 area burning with moderate spread due to winds, and requested the "All Hands" assignment. This brought in crews from Sanford and Kennebunk to assist. The fire was contained to 1 acre. There were no injuries sustained during the incident.

Goodwins Mills responded with Forestry 87, Tanker 84, Chief 8-1, Chief 8-3, and a total of 14 personnel. Thank you to our dedicated staff and strong mutual aid response for a quick containment of the fire.

Crews were cleaned up and back in service around 5:30pm. The fire investigation was referred to Maine Forest Service.
