Tap your brakes, UTV owners.

The new law making UTVs eligible to be street legal on many roads will take effect on Nov. 18, 2026. The SCDMV will begin titling and registering them for possible on-road use at that time. Until that time, UTVs are not legal to drive on the state's roads.

Once registered, UTVs will need to have verified insurance, like other vehicles on the road. UTV drivers on state roads must have a valid license and be at least 17 years old.

The privilege of operating a UTV on South Carolina roadways comes with the same responsibilities that apply to other motor vehicles.
