When a devastating house fire destroyed S’s home, she and her five children lost nearly everything overnight. With nowhere else to go, they were among the very first families welcomed into Miriam’s House’s new emergency Family Shelter.

While staying at the shelter, S worked with our Community First team to create a plan for housing. Finding an affordable home for such a large family was no small task, but through advocacy and partnership, our team helped secure a home where S and her children could begin again.

S shared, “Knowing I’m already going through a lot, it feels nice to have help. I don’t feel like I’m doing it all by myself.”

As her family moved into housing, our team helped reconnect utilities and provided essential household items to help them settle in. Today, S is working two jobs while pursuing her long-term goal of becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant. Her oldest daughter recently started working as well, helping contribute to the household as they build long-term stability.

Reflecting on her journey, S shared, “ Proud that I have God and every day is a new start.” When asked what having a home means to her, S described it as making memories with her children, gathering around the dinner table, celebrating Christmas together, and having a place to relax after a long day’s work.

A home is more than a house. For S, it’s a sanctuary where her family can find stability, make memories, and look forward to the future.

Earlier this month, 45 incredible, hard-working students from Randolph College volunteered with us! They pulled weeds, gathered sticks, washed windows and entryways, tidied up the outside of our building, and even helped sort and clean toys in our family living rooms.

We’re so grateful for their time, energy, and willingness to pitch in! Thank you, Randolph College, for being such great neighbors!

This week, we’re celebrating the 16-year work anniversary of our Executive Director, Sarah!

For the past 16 years, Sarah has been a driving force behind our mission to end homelessness and rebuild lives, leading with vision, expertise, and purpose. Her impact reaches far beyond the walls of Miriam’s House—from the individuals and families we serve, to our staff, supporters, community partners, and the broader effort to address homelessness across our region.

Sarah leads with bold conviction and unwavering compassion. She is a tireless advocate for our neighbors experiencing homelessness, a thoughtful mentor to our team, and a trusted voice in our community. Whether she’s speaking to a room full of supporters, advocating for change, securing critical resources, or encouraging someone on our team to grow, she brings passion and purpose to everything she does.

We are so grateful for Sarah’s leadership and for all she gives to Miriam’s House and to our community. Join us in celebrating not only this incredible milestone, but the countless lives touched, families supported, relationships built, and marked progress made toward a community where everyone has a place to call home.

We are the luckiest to have community minded businesses, like Moore & Giles, volunteer their time with us! Last week, their team put together our new playroom furniture ensuring that children staying at our shelter have a fun and engaging space to play and unwind. Thank you Moore & Giles for your commitment to our work and your willingness to generously give back to Lynchburg nonprofits!

Today, we’re celebrating Lexie’s 3-year workversary at Miriam’s House!

Over the past three years, Lexie has made a lasting impact on the lives of families experiencing homelessness. Now serving as our Housing Locator, she works closely with landlords, property managers, and community partners to identify housing opportunities and help ensure more families have a place to call home.

Building relationships is at the heart of Lexie’s work. Her persistence, creativity, and commitment to expanding housing opportunities help open doors for families while strengthening partnerships throughout our community.

Lexie, thank you for three years of dedication, collaboration, and unwavering commitment to ending homelessness. We’re so grateful you’re part of the !

Over the summer we were so fortunate to have Lily join our team on their college break! Lily worked in our family shelter providing a safe, clean and welcoming space for those in need and we are so grateful!

Today, we’re celebrating Lindsay’s 2-year work anniversary!

As our Coordinated Entry Specialist, Lindsay is often one of the first people individuals and families connect with when they’re facing a housing crisis. With compassion, patience, and a deep knowledge of our community’s resources, she helps ensure each person is connected to the support that best meets their unique needs.

Behind the scenes, Lindsay also works to strengthen our coordinated entry system, foster collaboration among community partners, and make it easier for our neighbors facing homelessness to access housing and services. Her thoughtful approach and commitment to continuous improvement help create a more responsive and equitable homeless response system for our entire region.
