Lynchburg Mayor Treney Tweedy gave a powerful speech to Lynchburg at today's NAACP prayer vigil and peaceful protest and also spoke about Pres. Trump staging a visit to the historic St. John's Church across from the White House, where he held up a Bible after authorities had cleared the area of peaceful protesters using tear gas.

"That is not the God I serve. That is not the God who will bring justice. That is not the God who will allow us to see the day that you will be ushered out of D.C." https://bit.ly/2U1kMlE

On Tuesday, June 2, 2020 @ 11 a.m., a diverse consortium of citizens organized by the Lynchburg Branch of the NAACP, The Lynchburg Voters’ League, civic and human rights groups, and members of the clergy in Lynchburg and the surrounding communities, will gather at Monument Terrace, in Lynchburg, VA, as a sign of solidarity in the belief the RACISM must die! The recent murders of People of Color (PoC) in Minnesota, Kentucky and Georgia, the countless undocumented infringements upon the rights of PoC to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness across these United States and even here in Lynchburg, VA; the slanderous remarks made by the Chancellor of Liberty University, Mr. Jerry Falwell, Jr. against the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the creation of a mask that ALLEGEDLY portrays Dr. Ralph Northam, and the unmitigated gall of the Pastor of the Grace and Truth Baptist Church in Roanoke, VA, Rev. Paul Morrow, to declare that Governor Northam is the son of the Anti-Christ on a sign outside its edifice is ENOUGH!!! Did you forget Pastor Morrow that the Bible directs us to “…render unto Caesar, that which is Caesar’s…” or does it only apply to the one occupying the residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue?

We come together, united in the belief that we are ONE nation, Under GOD with Liberty and Justice for ALL! In the words of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “…darkness does not drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only LOVE can do that.”

In compliance with Gov. Northam's directive only a few people with gather at the Monument practicing the mask directive and social distancing, but we invite all that support this effort to drive by and honk your car horns in support of our effort to demonstrate what LOVE looks like in Lynchburg!!!!

Please be advised of the information regarding any upcoming events we scheduled for the Lynchburg NAACP branch-

In light of the growing spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), we have made the decision to close all NAACP National Offices until at least April 30. Our concern and priority has always been the health and safety of our employees and, accordingly, all National Office staff members are working remotely during this time.
All OFFICES, MEETINGS, AND GATHERINGS
With regards to Branch offices, State/Area Conference offices, meetings and gatherings organized or sponsored by NAACP units, we are asking that you follow the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), state and local government entities and refrain from gathering in person until at least April 30.

We recognize that these decisions are difficult and can potentially be challenging to operations. It is an opportunity for us to try new ways of reaching out and engaging the community, increase our collaboration with others who share similar goals and harness the talents of our membership like never before.

****Any and all meetings as well as our up coming annual breakfast will be canceled until further notice ****
Any questions regarding this information should be directed to our Vice President Brenda Farmer

Thank you and please take care of yourself and each other. 🙏

Dunbar High In Black And White: The Integrated Years, 1970-1977

In honor of Black History Month, today we celebrate Mr. M. W. “Teedy” Thornhill, Jr.

Many will recognize former Mayor Thornhill and his family, from their work and compassion, at the family owned and operated Community Funeral Home.

“Mr. Thornhill is a graduate of Dunbar High School and Echols College.’ He later attended St. Emma Military Academy.

‘Mr. Thornhill has been a member and past president of the Lynchburg Voter’s League, for over forty years, former president of the N.A.A.C.P, and the first African-American to serve on the Lynchburg Bi-Racial Commission. He served on the Lynchburg City Council for 16 years, as Vice-Mayor for eight years, and beginning in 1990, as Lynchburg’s first elected black mayor. “

Playing it safe didn’t work out so well in 2016. Another chance:
I know that you have been waiting for the Minority Business Showcase 2020... we are so very excited to have Financial Fancy with Charese Chambers as our first speaker. I would like for the NAACP to look into the aquital of the young man that killed the EC Glass football player. Here it is days before 2020 and we as a people are still dealing with injustice such as this. IT HAS TO STOP.
