To round out National Forage Week, The University of Tennessee Beef and Forage Center wanted to remind everyone that we are less than 12 DAYS away from the submission deadline for the 2027 Resource Management Calendar!

The grand prize winner will be featured on the front of our 2027 Resource Management Calendar! In addition, twelve additional photos will be selected as monthly features in the calendar.
Submit high-quality landscape-orientation photographs of barns, farm landscapes, grazing cattle, pasture and/or hay from any point during the year.

🚨 Last Call – Private Applicator Pesticide CEUs 🚨

This is a reminder for all private pesticide applicators that we are nearing the end of the current certification cycle. The Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA) certification period runs through June 30, 2026, and all required continuing education units (CEUs) must be completed by that date to maintain certification.

If you have already completed your required 3 CEUs, your certification will automatically roll over into the new cycle.

If you are still short on points, this meeting is your last opportunity to earn CEUs before the rollover deadline. After June 30, 2026, applicators who have not met requirements will be required to retest to regain certification.

Check out this awesome group we had today! 🍕🫐

These young chefs had a busy day in the kitchen! They made bread in a bag and turned it into their very own personal pizzas. We enjoyed some time outside before coming back in to make homemade pop tarts with a fresh blueberry filling.

They didn’t let anything go to waste—they used the leftover filling to make blueberry butter spread and the leftover juice to make refreshing blueberry lemonade! What a fun and delicious day of learning! 💙🍋

Happy National Forage Week!

Dr. Hannah Wright-Smith joins us for another edition of W**d Wednesday! Today's subject, by popular demand, is Dogfennel!

By popular demand, this week's w**d is dogfennel. Dogfennel, sometimes called summer cedar, is a perennial warm-season w**d that can spread by both seed and rhizomes. It emerges in late spring and can reach over 6 feet tall by the end of the summer if left uncontrolled. As it grows, the stems become woody and unpalatable or livestock. Herbicide applications are more effective when plants are less than 2 feet tall. Herbicides like GrazonNext, Gunslinger AMP, Grazon PD3, and Gunslinger P+D are not the best option for controlling dogfennel. Instead, use PastureGard at 1 to 1.5 pt/A, Brash or W**dmaster at 2 pt/A, or GrazonPD3 20 to 37 fl oz/A, or Gunslinger P+Dat 2 to 4 pt/A plus nonionic surfactant at 2 qt/100 gallons of spray solution, or Crossbow at 4 qt/A. GrazonPD3 and Gunslinger P+D are restricted use pesticides and require an applicator's license to purchase and apply. Make your herbicide application in late spring or early summer, prior to dogfennel reaching 2 feet tall. If regrowth occurs later in the summer when weather is hot and dry, mow dogfennel to prevent flowering.

What a wonderful day with these girls! Mrs. Brenda and Miss Keely spent the day teaching these young ladies about canning while making blueberry butter. Of course, we had to end the day with ice cream topped with fresh blueberry syrup! 🫐🍦
