The virus that causes COVID-19 can spread from a person before they have symptoms. Take action to slow the spread by wearing a cloth face covering in public spaces, keeping at least 6 feet of physical distance, and frequently washing your hands.

A cloth face covering can be made from items around your home, such as a scarf or cloth napkin. Make sure the covering reaches above your nose and below your chin.

Wear a cloth face covering to slow the spread of coronavirus. Growing evidence suggests the virus can spread:

• Before people show symptoms (pre-symptomatic) and
• From people who have the virus but never show symptoms (asymptomatic).

Cloth face coverings help prevent spread of COVID-19 in these situations. Learn more about these coverings and how you can make one: https://bit.ly/2Ravt42

The @RedCross now faces a severe blood shortage due to an unprecedented number of blood drive cancellations during this #coronavirus outbreak. Healthy individuals are urged to donate now to help patients counting on lifesaving blood. Make an appt. at this Lynchburg location: https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/drive-results?order=DATE&range=10&zipSponsor=24501 #COVID19

FROM THE RED CROSS
You may be asking:

• The public is being asked to avoid mass gatherings. Aren’t blood drives mass gatherings?

Like a hospital, grocery store, or pharmacy, a blood drive is essential to ensuring the health of the community, and the Red Cross will continue to hold blood drives during this challenging time to help meet patient needs. In fact, the U.S. surgeon general has said, “You can still go out and give blood. We’re worried about potential blood shortages in the future. Social distancing does not have to mean social disengagement.”

We understand that people have concerns right now about all aspects of public health, but want to stress that donating blood is a safe process and people should not hesitate to give. Most blood drives are not considered “mass gatherings” as these are controlled events with trained staff and appropriate safety measures to protect donors and recipients. It’s important to note that at each blood drive and donation center, Red Cross employees follow thorough safety protocols to help prevent the spread of any type of infection.

• Rumor has it that if you can’t afford the test for coronavirus, the Red Cross will test your blood when you donate. Is that true?

There is no test to screen blood donations for the coronavirus and other respiratory viruses. It’s important to emphasize that there are no data or evidence that this coronavirus can be transmitted by blood transfusions, and there have been no reported cases of transfusion transmission for any respiratory virus including this coronavirus worldwide.

And, our employees better not be doing this either!

Look at what our crews found in a manhole this morning! These kinds of rags and wipes can cause awful sewer backups & overflows, and that's the last thing we need right now!

PLEASE dispose of wipes and rags in the trash can, NOT the toilet! #toiletsarenottrashcans Lynchburg Water Resources
